I've stated my opinion many times while you will never see it. Heat and electronics do not play hand in hand. You can build a PID and buy a pot of your choice and be better off. You will be able to use the PID on a lube sizer or electric smoker if you so wish.

I waited and waited. About 1 year ago I bought a used ProMelt and it is a awesome.

I didn't even wait at all. I went straight to the Pro-Melt after my first encounter with Lyman customer service on another issue. One more thanks to Lyman for helping me make the right decision. The Pro-Melt is awesome.

I think dragon is right, fair chance you'll never see it for the reason he gives. Stick a circuit board on an 800 degree lead pot and the life expectancy of said circuit board would be pretty short. Lyman hasn't made any statements that I'm aware of but this has been put off, postponed so many times that it's the logical explanation. Simple fix really, just don't attach the electronics to the pot as pictures from Lyman have it, use two separate units just like all other PID controlled pots.

They could heavily insulate the PID cavity and stick a cooling fan in it. This will of course drive up cost. And even then you are dealing w/ a lot of heat transfer so the PID will have to be as far away as possible. IMO having it anywhere near molten lead is not a smart idea. Splashes happen to often. A remote unit is the best option but it defeats the purpose of all the all in one unit that Lyman is trying to sell.

Wow BigDan that was only 1 week, others have been waiting about 4 years since it was announced at the SHOT Show. :mrgreen:

I just went to the Lyman site and it still says late 2014 so they have plenty of time to change that. It's been put off 6 months to a year over and over and over again. No reason to think anyone will see it this year.

Their site also says:

"The first to offer an advanced digital thermal management system with key pad controls".

That's blatantly false and I'm sure Magma would be interested in learning that, they've had theirs out for many years now.

That could be my post verbatim. Even if Lyman gets their PID working properly, if they're still using the same drippy spigot as the Mag 20, it'll still be a frustrating experience. CAST BOOLITS - NOT STALAGMITES!!!

I waited, for a while. Springfield convinced me to get a Magma Masterpot. With a PID from a former member, it runs very well and I'm very happy with the setup.

I bought a Lyman sonic cleaner. In less than a month it was leaking. Lyman won't even respond to my inquiries about warranty. Glad I didn't wait on them for the casting pot! If I can help it, they've seen the last of my money.

The worse part is that the Lyman US cleaner is the exact same unit they sell at Harbor Freight. For less money then what Lyman charges.

If they ever do release it it will be wise to stay away from it for several years, let somebody else be the beta tester. I went through being a beta tester on the Mag 20 when it came out. The early ones used an aluminum pot with the spout attached with a nut which, IIRC, was inside the pot. It would not stay tight. I suspect that the pot liner got so hot (the heating coil was under the liner and could be seen, glowing red, through the gap between the pot shell and the spout) that it softened and differential coefficients of expansion would squeeze the aluminum out from under the nut. The leak on that jewel was around the spout, not through it, and the liquid lead would run out through the same gap you could see the glowing element through. They gave me a new pot under warranty and I promptly sold it to someone who thought they were getting a hell of a deal. Sometime later they went to a stainless liner.

I know that I am in the minority here but I have owned a MAG 20 for 29 years and it works great.
About 11 years ago it needed a new thermostat, No problem I sent it back and they fixed it for the
cost of shipping. Don't put dirty lead in it and it will not drip.

After the service (appalling) from Lyman I received seeking a new element for my Mag 20 I got the Pro-Melt. I have nothing but praise for all things RCBS especially their service. I would not touch anything Lyman again.

I just received a back order email from Midsouth on the Lyman Mag. 25 pot. I was hesitant to ok the b.o. since I am putting a PID together however I decided to give it a try. After all, can one have too many casting pots? I'll post some pics and my evaluation when it gets here.

My pot showed up yesterday. I havent had a chance to fire it up, but it looks well built. Built in fan, pid, warming plate the whole 9 yards. They included a note that says they have melted roughly 4lbs of alloy in my pot prior to shipping as part of their extensive testing process (there is residue of alloy left in the pot.) going to fire it up tonight, will report back

Mind you, I've bashed Lyman before. But they recently brought back the 457130, brought out a fat 38-55 and after a long wait this new pot.

More'n I've seen from RCBS lately and I'm a big green fan.

Fired the pot up the other day, took a little while to fully melt 25lbs of lead as to be expected. I definitly need to modify the mold guide to work with noe and mp molds. First time using apot with a pid controller, it help temp very well. Using a 4 cav lyman mold I was casting good boolits from the get go and infact cast some of the best quality bases I've done. To date. I need to spend some time adjusting the flow rate as from factory it was ser wide open. The mold warming tray works ok but I found it takes a while to heat the molds up and I may end up continueing use of my hot plate. All in all money well spent. I look forward to casting more with my new pot.
