About 25 years ago I owned a Remington 541T rifle. It was a great rimfire rifle and was the best shooting .22 I ever had. I put a fixed 4 powder Leopold on it (the scope & mounts cost more than the rifle !) and with the right ammo it would outshoot me any day. In fact it shot better than some super high dollar rifles that my richer friends owned. I loved that gun ! There was nothing wrong with that gun.
Then one day I said to myself......." if that 541T shoots good.... a heavy barreled 541T has to shoot better".
I removed the scope (I wasn't completely brain dead, just impulsive) and traded that 541T for a brand new heavy barreled 541T. That trade cost me some cash and the best .22 rifle I've ever owned.
I still own that heavy barreled 541T and it shoots pretty well. It weighs twice as much as my old standard barrel 541 and it almost shoots as well........almost.
By the time I realized what a moron I had been, my first 541 was gone. In hindsight, I don't think all Remington 541T's are as good as the one I had but I somehow got my hands on an exceptional example. Then like a true idiot, I rolled the dice again.

I recently obtained a Marlin 39A. It's not a great gun but this particular one happens to be the first gun I ever shot.
I don't intend to do something stupid like trade it for something else.

Surely none of us would ever do anything stupid...

At least you made the right decision this time. I know I've done the same stupid thing more than once. Wait a minute...no, I'd never do anything like that...What?

The first .22 I ever owned was a 39A It would drive tacks at 25 yards.

Doing stupid things gives you much needed experience. Learn from those times and improve your life. Moving forward is always great!

The standard bbl'd remingtons always did shoot lights out. One of my favorite's for the 50yd line, a standard bbl'd usmc 40x. The stock is beat up but the metal is good & it will swat flies with the right ammo.

The 540 series that remington came out with had the fastest lock time of any rimfire they ever produced. Because of this they make excellent offhand/silhouette rifles. A remington 540x with the same standard target bbl.

Another favorite from the 540 series, the remington 541-s sporter. They are a pure joy to shoot with their lightning fast lock times, match chambers/bbl's & adjustable triggers. A pair of the remington 541-s rifles.

Any one of these rifles have the ability to give the 541-t's all they can handle. Keep an eye out for any of the volkers 541 series rifles. They come up for sale every now & then. His work takes these rifles to the next level.

Just sold a pistol at a good price and used the $$$ to fund a project gun, I already miss it and wish I wouldn't a sold it. But that doesn't even make the top 10 of stupid things I've done, in the last two weeks.

Forrest r - those are some nice rifles. Thanks for sharing.

I've always said that everyone should have at least one good .22 rimfire rifle. It's one of the most useful firearms you'll ever own.

I recall I was cash strapped for a 25 yr. anniversary gift for the Frau, still am cash strapped! A fellow at my gun club always was bugging me to sell my 6" S&W M 27 to him. So I sold him the pistol, speed loaders and a nice leather holster. Got the Frau a nice emerald ring and a fancy dinner out of that money. Still got the Frau 21 yrs. later, but still wish I had that pistol back!Robert

I had a S&W 686-1 that would put 2 cylinders of ammo [that's 12 rounds] in an area the size of your thumb nail at 50 feet.
I sold it to a guy who HAD TO HAVE IT and he paid me twice the going rate of a new one, I wish I had it back.

I got a used, about minty 541-T HB w/ the box and manual for $400.00 a few years back. I put a Spare Weaver CKT-15 15X scope on it in Burris Signature Zee rings. Yep, she shoots!

My homemade, mulit-slot scope base. No, that cheezy, Chinese scope is no longer on the rifle! it was just for resting. A nice, B&L 3-9 is there now.

Only ever sold one. The Rossi .38 shot 5 FEET LEFT to POA at 15 feet. Only lost $15 on the deal, never looked back. Still have every other one I ever bought.

Every time I've sold or traded off a firearm could fall into this category, whether I made a profit or not.
I don't regret giving a firearm to a friend or relative.

As for other classes of being stupid with a firearm the most stupid was trying to knock over a firebrick with a .22 pistol. The bullet bounced straight back over the sights and broke the frame of my glasses, broke a small piece out of the rim of the lens, and left a blood blister on my eye lid.
While the glases were not regular shooting glasses they did have the old armor glass lenses that were at least as tough as modern shooting glasses lenses.

I've never wished for one back. There was a reason I got them cheap, and thats how I got rid of them. Now I've quit buying cheap guns, and I keep them every one.
Lesson learned.

I've screwed up a couple times over the years... but the only guns that have ever left me were ones that, no matter what was done to them, could not be made to shoot a small group. Getting rid of those... no regrets.

The worst offender was a Kel-Tec 9mm carbine that I won in a raffle. I wanted it to shoot well... oh did I want it to shoot well. Alas, an eight inch 50 yard "group" was the best it could ever manage. Traded it in for the pink laminate stocked Savage Cub my younger daughter got for her 10th birthday. Five years later, that little rifle, with the factory peep sight, makes 3" groups at 100 yards, and I'm TERRIBLE with iron sights.

But yes, I definitely had an attack of "dah stoopid" while I owned that Kel-Tec...

ive gotten rid of a few that I really regret myself. 1 of them was an older marlin 39 a , the 2nd was my 1st rifle ever a marlin 336 that I bought used with a bushnell 4x scope a leather sling and a box of ammo out the door for 175$ (price 1 now a days)and the 3rd was a Remington mod 788 in 243 with a 2.5-7 weaver scope on it it was probably the best shooting rifle I ever owned . im sure if I sat here long enough I could think of a few more bone head moves ive made as far as selling and trading goes .

Dumbest: I traded a like new Colt Python for a 1995 Mustang Gt for the wife. I will never sell a gun ever again for "materials".
