View Full Version : Wild West peep on 444

This is where my Wild West peep sits to hit 2" high centered at 50y. Load is 429421 over 50 +/- g of 4895 at around 19-2000fps. The windage dosent bother me so much, but I'm beyond bottomed out on elevation. The elevation screw is barely holding the peep.

I guess I could take some metal off the bottom of the site, but does this make any sense?

It would work but +2" @ 50 doesn't sound like a problem. Where does it hit at 100, or is it strictly for close range work?

If you look at the top left of the peep slide you can see the elev set screw. That's why it's a problem.....there is less then half of the screw holding the site in place on a heavy recoiler

That does make sense. Take a little off the base. I mounted a peep on an 1894 years ago. Different problem, same solution.

Different front sight blade?

Different front sight blade?
No need for a question mark..
It is defiantly a problem that can be fixed with a front site of a proper height..
To the OP move your rear site to the middle of your slider, remove your front site, and wrap a black zip tie around your barrel with the loose end up and centered the best you can get it..
Then put a large target out it the distance you would like your rifle sited in for and let the lead fly..

Clip the zip tie shorter until you have the proper height for site in then measure the distance from the bottom of your dovetail to the top of your zip tie..
That measurement will be your front site height ..

Go to Brownells or some other gun parts supplier and buy the proper site for your needs..
Note that you have the option of buying front sites for both ramp and dovetail mounted..

You can also use black electrical tape in place of the zip tie but it with be flimsier..

If you are wanting your rifle to be dead on at 50 and it is 2" high now with your rear site elevation bottomed, out then you will need a slightly higher front site..

You might get away with attaching a piece of black tape to your front site with out removing it to make it taller to get the your needed measurement..
That would be an easy way to go if you have a blade as opposed to a bead front site now..

edit:
I should add tips about removing your front site..
Barrel mounted dovetail:
As you look down the barrel from the muzzle end remove the site by using a brass punch drifting the site to the left as sometimes the dovetails are tapered cut ..
Ramp mounted:
If you have a ramp mounted front site then do not drift the site out with a punch as you will most likely take the ramp off with the site..
I speak from experience on that!
Use a front site pusher from Brownells made by Williams..

I've had to add a front sight change with any receiver peep sight on a lever. It is a common part of the upgrade. The cheek weld was a better fit with the small added height.

What these guys said about the front sight height. It needs to be changed.

However what concerns me is that a 429421 at 1900-2000 fps is probably going to lead your barrel like crazy,,, so you might want to check that frequently so you don't blow yourself up.

Plain based boolits generally don't work very well above about 1500 fps. That's why they make gas checks and the mould to use is Lyman 429244. I can't see a 429421 NOT Leading the barrel at those velocities.

Not trying to be a Smart ****,,, just a little worried about your safety.

HA! No doubt. Brain farted that one. I'm using the 429244, with check and carnuba red.

The rifle has the front sight shroud, and I like the way it looks. And the current sight is centered pretty well in it. Pretty sure I had some Unique loads that were shooting straight, but low. For now I might just go with those. Didn’t work much with them but if they are ~1500FPS, then I’m good for deer. And will save my shoulder.

The Zip Tie Is A Great Idea, I'll Keep That In Mind!

Different front sight blade?

+1 - Bite the boolit and install a .10" higher front sight blade.

Was looking at the Brownells website and having a hard time finding the right sight. current one is .302 tall, base is .372 square. its also very T shaped with no significant radius between verticals and horizontal, less target blockage maybe.

Brownells dosent really give any dimensions other then height, and a lot have a huge radius. and none look right... a lot, more over hang front and back. Any ideas?

Alot of these excellent after market Peep sights like the Skinner require higher front sights, for hunting i like the Firesight fronts.

The marbles and williams sights that are similar to the factory look both have similar base options. .340 for the middle one and .5+ for the wide one. nothing in between. I mentioned the current one is .372 square. Do I just get the .340 one and deal with the .016 gap on either side? I have the globe on the front anyway.

I had a hard time finding a sight. For such a common part I'm surprised they don't have specific parts named. Got the wrong one tho. Covers the screw holes.

the back I can file. The front has the bead.

Little goofy looking but the file did the trick. I have just enough room to torque the rear bolt w the screwdriver at a slight angle to clear the brass bead. Little cold blue and done. Also, how the .375 tall looks in the shroud. Pretty tall. Looks worse when looking thru the rear sight. Gonna have to get used to that.

Normally you would install the ramp on the barrel, then push the sight on, or a lotta front sights wouldn't fit.

Nrut mentioned busting the ramp off when not using a sight pusher. Don't have one so thought it wise to do it off barrel.

If you solidly support the ramp while beating--er, installing the new sight, you won't damage the ramp. I just finished doing this on my Savage 1899 that had a serious mishap while hunting and used a block of granite to brace the ramp while i drove the new Marbles blade into place.
