I have tried several powders for my 38-55. By far, the most accurate is IMR 3031 with my swaged boolits at around 30gr.

check out this from Beagle http://www.castpics.net/subsite2/ByCaliber/Cast%20in%20the%20.38-55.pdf

I would stay with faster burning powders such as H110 or 3031

I'm loading 31 grains IMR 4895 over a 270 grain bullet from one of Tom's molds made for my rifle. Average velocity is 1580 fps. It's a model 93 Marlin barreled with a 375 Douglas barrel. 3031 was in second place for accuracy.

Don't know about the 4895 loads. Seams mine likes 29 gr. of 3031 with a 265 gr. gas checked boolit. Through the chrony it's 1600 fps in a 20" barrel with no signs of pressure.

I loaded some 32.5 IMR 4895 on a joke to see if it will perform using 285 Gr. with GC shot excellent I have idea what the FPS from my 32" barrel.
My go to powder for the 38-55 is IMR 3031 with a soft BHN of 12 sarco mould #738 I shoot 33.5 grains no GC
no barrel leading.I been using a different bullet now from a caster in VT. soft BHN 11 with GC both FP and HP cast lead. I find these bullet like 28.5 to 30.00 gr. max using 3031 after that group starts to open up a little

what bullet wt is that from the vt caster. Are they from M&P? As I just bot 2 boxes of 260 gr pointed for my savage 99 from him and have IMR 3031 to try. What are starting and max loads

Something around 300 grains of lead and 55 grains of FFG might work.

I'd like to add my load to the pile in support of 3031.

My deer load is 32 grains of 3031 beneath a 255 grain powder coated boolit.

It flies at about 1700 fps, and out of my 26" barreled Winchester, makes 3/4" groups at 50 yards with my tang peep sight. This is everything I need and I think you'd enjoy the same kind of success if you used this powder too.

For a fun plinking load, I use 5 grains of Unique under that same boolit. It sounds like a .22 short when I shoot it, and is incredibly fun and accurate.
