Been working with the RCBS 35-200 boolit and 5744 powder. Doing ok but would like to improve 100 yd groups. Looking to be around 200o fps. what's everybody loading?

Can you provide more info on what you've been doing? That would help. Like do you heat treat? What alloy are you using? Lube? Size? FL or neck sizing? Barrel length? Twist?

I personally don't have a 35 Whelen load for 200gr. I just have a 300gr load at 2000 Ft/Sec that I'm working on to increase velocity.

Are you using a filler with the 5744? I use 4759 with a dacron filler with good accuracy. Imr 3031 and h 4895 both worked well with 200 gr. boolits for speed. Reduced loads with either of those powders needs a filler too, but once up to 47 gr. or so of 3031 or 4895 leave the filler out as there will be enough case fill without it then.
Imr 4350 has worked really well with 50 gr and 54 1/2 gr. and a 200 gr. boolit in my rifle for 1950 fps. and 2200 plus fps.

I had to heat treat my boolits to get accuracy past 1800 fps. in my whelen....hope some of this helps.

Thank for the info 35 shooter. Nope no filler with 5744. Do you know what velocity you're getting with 47 gr 3031?

Haven't chronoed it with 3031, but according to a lyman manual I was guessing somewhere around 2400 fps with 48 gr. But that is just a guess according to the info they showed with a 204 gr. boolit, could easily be lower. I started with 40 gr. and a dacron filler and worked up till i had about 85% case fill, then worked up from there without a filler. I did the same thing with h4895. 48 gr. shot best on the high end with both powders for me, but as i said i started at 40 and worked up.

As always, make a chamber cast to see what size the throat in your barrel is. SAAMI spec is .360" +.002, and the RCBS boolit usually isn't that big. I had a Ruger M77 35 Whelen for a while and once I realized how big the boolits needed to be, I found it much easier to achieve good accuracy with it.
