I use Dacron as a filler sometimes, I wonder if this may work better???

I have used it in an original Ballard .25-25 Stevens using Swiss 3FG black. Stuff is very fine & fluffy..I believe it is some type of cellulose impregnated with Moly..will stain your fingers..but works very well...I use the Lee dipper set to measure.

I may have to try this. I like the idea of having a filler I can measure and pour like powder.

In my 1871 Mauser, it was magic dust. Gun went from 7" groups at 50 to 1.5".

Varying success in other guns.

Howdy !

Yeh.....great stuff, IME .

I used it to good effect in a 22" .357AutoMag " carbine ", and also in .35Rem Marlin M-336 XLR ( See 100yd pics ).

In the .35 Rem ( and shooting IMR4759 ), I place a " wad " of tissue paper over the PuffLon/powder columne; and tamp down lightly for some slight compaction; then seat bullet. Seems to work !

The 2ea " flier " seen in pic are the result of my misinterpreting the windflag.... twice !

I use Puf Lon in my 8x57 Mauser hunting loads. With my rather newish bore the 8mm Karabiner fits very tight in the throat and protrudes quite far down into the case. They scattered all over the target until I filled up the case with puf lon. It must act as a big gas seal protecting the exposed boolit base because accuracy dramatically improved. This is very expensive stuff so I hesitate to say everyone should try it, but it really does work for me in my rifles.

It is rather pricey to be sure. I bought the large can a while ago and generally use it for my long range loads due to its propensity to bring down extreme spreads in velocity as well as slightly tighten up my groups out of 30 and 31 calibre military rifles.

Here is a recent test using an 1891 Mauser and the following components: 208 grain Lyman 314299 boolit over SR 4759 powder with CCI 200 primers and Norma cases.

Without Puf-Lon:

Average velocity of 1761 fps, Es 54, Sd 15 for 13 shots for 2 1/2 MOA accuracy.

With Puf-Lon:

Average velocity of 1773 fps, Es 10, Sd 3.6 for 13 shots for 2 MOA accuracy.

I just returned from a trip to Wyoming and Colorado where I was using a 1903 Springfield with loads using Puf-Lon out to 400 yards. Accuracy on targets of opportunity equaled jacketed bullets all the way out to 400 yards in this particular rifle.

The main reason I originally thought to use Puf-Lon was to protect plain base boolits out of my Winchester lever action rifles in 30/30 and 32 Special. So far, the jury is still out on that particular use, but experimentation continues.

I like the idea of using plain based bullets. I have a Marlin in .32 Winchester Special and the only suitable bullet mold I have is a plain based .32-40 design. This stuff may help.

How does the lube in it work? I presume you still need to lube bullets in the conventional way?

I get the same benefits from creamowheat and used coffee grounds i'm seeing described of pufflon.

Is the extra $ worth it?

Is the extra $ worth it?I've thorough tested puf-lon, original grex and another one. My answer is; no. I find the use of the Dacron filler to work just as good, is a lot easier to use and costs next to nothing.

Concerning COW as filler..in that .25-25 Stevens..the cases were made by RCM (Rocky Mountain Cartridge Co.) These are turned from solid brass rod on CNC lathes so there are fine tooling marks inside case. I first tried the COW as filler & every case stretched up to .050"! had 1 seperation with front portion of case stuck in throat. COW will compress into a solid mass and I believe the COW was being forced into those fine tool marks pulling brass along with it. No such problems with Puff-Lon. Of course with regular drawn cases there is less of a problem.

You lube the boolit as normal with whatever your favorite lube is and then seat it over the Puf-Lon.

The manufacturer claims that the Puf-Lon adds lubricity to the mix during the combustion of the powder and reduces leading for higher velocities. So far my PB boolit tests (as noted in previous post) do not bear that out, but I'm still trying.
