View Full Version : Lyman 313445 in the 30/30.....suggested loads using unique?

This wierd old wadcutter mold is one I picked up for use in the 32H&R and 327 Fed.Mag.

I'm interested in sizing some down to .311 to try in the 30/30 marlin 336. The boolits drop from the mold right around 100grains and .3125 in diameter so sizing them down in a lee push thru should be pretty simple.

The hope is that it will provide a nice efficient plinking and small game load.
Not looking for a full power load out of it.....just something mild and accurate.

Do any of you have experience with this particular boolit in the 30/30?
The powders I have on hand are Unique and W296 so any suggestions with those powders will be most helpful.

Thanks, Charlie

Look for "Cat Sneeze " or "mouse fart" loads. Lots of postings about using 32 cal pistol boolits in 30-31 ish rifles.

Yeah, I have been doing that lately and done quite a bit of reading up on light loads in the 30/30. The Lee molds get mentioned a lot and the 115grain Lyman/ideal (311008) comes up frequently, but I don't see much info specific to the 313445. Load data for pistol or rifle is scant for this boolit.
Maybe this is a less common mold.

5 gr. unique work for me.

Looks like an excellent boolit for a light 30-30 load, some ways possibly better than the 314008 or the little Lee 32-20 boolit.

Those look nice! No experience with that particular boolit myself, but I bet those'll make an awesome target/plinker round with light loads of just about any fast pistol/shotgun powder. I've had decent results with ~5gr Trail Boss with the similar-weight Lee 311-100-2r PB 32cal pistol bullet, but haven't done much testing with them yet other than that. I'm going to guess that the 296 will be a bit too slow, so I'd probably try around 6-7gr Unique.

I'd start at 7gr of Unique, try up & down from there. Start at 12gr of 296, try both ways from there. I haven't tried that bullet, but based on similar weights in 30 30, it should be safe and in the ball park. Let us know how it goes.

I suspect you will find happiness somewhere around 8 grains of either Herco or Unique. My daughter and I shot up many thousand of 311-419 and 311-245 boolits over those loads. Groups ran 2 inches or less at 50 yards and we used them for chickens in lever action rifle silhouette. Your boolit should work fine.

8gr will be too much for that bullet. I am with David on his suggestion of 5gr Unique.

I'd vary the boolit seating depth for accuracy. ...
+1 on the 5 grns Unique. I usually use Green Dot.

Thanks for the great feedback. I'll start out with a starting load of 5grains of Unique and work it from there. Janoosh, The boolit has a crimp groove and since I am using it in gun with a tubular magazine. I was planning on using that to set a nice tight crimp. Are you suggesting I ignore the crimp groove and seat them out further?

It has been a few years, but I used Green Dot somewhere around 4 or 5 grains (don't have the load notes in front of me) when I loaded that boolit in the .30-30.

I didn't crimp heavily, but I was mostly shooting them through an old H&R 158 single shot. I can't remember if I even tried any through the Marlin or not.

I use 2.5-5.0 Unique with the Lee .314" 90gr SWC sized to .311" in my Marlin, depending on the use. 2.5 is quiet enough for backyard work, and 5.0 is a good small game load. Either is a no recoil low pressure load, so I would go with that. As to seating depth, I would try crimping in the crimp groove and see if it feeds well. With my Lee 90gr, I have to mess a little bit with seating depth to ensure feeding. I mean, if I crimp in the crimp groove or very front lube groove, it shoots great, but doesn't feed, but If I crimp in the second from last lube groove, it feeds fine and shoots just as well. So you may have to experiment a little bit to make it work.

Lonegun 1894 has nailed it. I couldn't have said it better.

Please let us know if it feeds through a gun with a tubular magazine. I have that mould but I have only used it in revolvers.

Will do. I'll try to find time to load up a few.

Thanks again to all who have responded.

UPDATE JAN. 2015: I loaded up some test rounds using 5gr. of Unique. Some were sized to .311 and some are as cast at .3125. Unfortunately I got busy during the hunting season and the holidays so I never had the chance to test the loads out. Will do so one of these days.....as the weather allows.
