Just a quick post and pictures.
i shot a few 12ga loads from the 870 today.
From the smoothebore barrel, shot the not-so-Hevi-Shot Hog Wild at 50 yds.
First, the target. Looks like I need to tap my front sight to the right a bit.

and some recovered components. of note, the spacers looked undamaged as did the one ball i could find, after hitting texas dirt and rocks.

And for fun, in the rifled barrel, i tried Hogtamers load of his modern flat nose slug in Hubel Sabot w 37gr steel, and well as the same load w a shortened minie ball type slug (still .578 diameter) of 424gr w a cork under it also in a hubel sabot w 37gr A.Steel.
The modern flat nose didn't shoot well, but the short minie's did very well. no explaination for the difference:

here are some recovered components from the "short slug' hubel-hogtamer load. the sabots opened perfectly and dropped all at abt 25 yds. When i loaded them, i smooshed them flat before loading them, so they were pre-opened, if you will.

Nice!
I used to shoot alot of hevi-shot for geese until the price for 10# went from $70 to $130!
Alliant steel, ballistic products mm1035 and tps wads were my powder and wads of choice. Mythin and mica for barrell protection and lube. Mix 47 buffer really makes a load shine! All my experience was in a rem sp-10 and not a 12 ga. Though. Keep at it, hevi shot is impressive shot.

i couldn't get those "beer can" lee "improved minies to shoot well either. The 37 grns of Steel is plenty of punch though. Much better with the old style lyman minies. That's a great pattern with the Hog Wild loads though. Full choke?

BTW, it rained since i shot these, and i found a ball yesterday; dirty but almost undamaged. SO maybe these lighter-than-hevi balls are not so bad.
Might get a chance to try them soon, too.

I have been reading about these. I have read most of the threads on here about them so far. when I first found these I was wanting the Dixie tri ball but I couldn't find any.

I bought some of the hevi shot 3 ball and tried them out this weekend. I got about 2-3 inch patterns at 35 yards. at 65 yards I was about 14 inches. I was hoping for a little better than that. have you tried any different chokes?
