Wear them glasses .
I got this little cut/burn/tattoo from a cap fragment off my TC Hawken.

I'm just glad it was my thumb and not a nose piercing , it's cut clear to the ligaments. For scale that thumb takes a size 14 ring.

Wearing glasses is always excellent advice! I hope you recover from this soon.8-)

I also have no idea what size ring I'd wear on my thumb.

Recently my local indoor range has been ricocheting more lead back at me... yesterday I was hit twice.... those glasses came in handy. Glad you are staying safe!!!

It happens that I have fat fingers the last ring I had was a 14 that would just wiggle over the knuckle.

Being cross dominant is what got me the little war trophy.
The screened home powder under the Lyman Maxi did hit about a foot low at 100 but it's sighted for PRB. Target sights will fix that .

Put a Nipple cup on it... but being a TC it probably has the big snail type drum/breech plug right?

Yes it does.

I have had caps break up before but not like this .

I had a muzzle loader shooting next to me at the outdoor range recently. I kept getting hit with tiny little fragments. They didn't hurt, caused no harm, but were an annoyance. Put up with it for a while. Decided to say something during the next time out for targets. He packed up and left, so I said nothing. I had safety gear on, he had to shoot somewhere, seemed like a nice enough old coot, so I let it go.
I wonder how many muzzleloaders are unaware that that happens when they shoot?

He probably needed a new nipple or had bad hammer to nipple engagement they should stay together 95%+ of the time.

if you look most of the old rifles had a opening in the front of the hammer nose. this was so the pices would fly forward. flash cups do work. a bad nipple will cause caps to come apart.

i had a cap fragment hit me in the cheek caused a black eye. i switched to underhammers after that.

It is a new nipple . Ive had fragments before just never this level of damage or pieces that big. In truth the rifle probably doesn't have 200 rounds through it.

I had to go to the ER to have a piece removed from my left arm snapping caps on a inline to clear the nipple. This was with the old style of CCI musket caps. They were very hot! The new ones are weak. That was why they changed them.

I was talking about the guy with the experience at the range.
