Greeting,

Has anyone tried to throat a Uberti 1873 Rifle in 38-40 without pulling the barrel? My rifle has no throat at all. The rifling starts at the case mouth and has a 45 degree angle and bullets just smash into the start of the rifling. I can pull the barrel but would prefer not to. I've already tried different bullet diameters and changing bullet hardness, accuracy increase was slight at best.

thanks,

Billy

You can try using a bullet and valve grinding compound on a long 1/4" rod on a battery drill. Might relieve the throat enough. Roll the bullet ogive in the compound on a flat plate to impregnate the grit into the bullet. Put a headless fired shell in the chamber to keep the bullet lined up, and to protect the neck of the chamber from grit. Oil the throat to keep the bullet from binding when running the drill. A jacketed bullet might be better (egad!) for this.
