How about an after effect of a PCed bullet? A lee 309-150fn over 21.5 grn IMR-4198 sized to .310 out of a Ruger ranch 7.62x39.. distance 178 yards she ran maybe 10 feet...not shabby

Trying to come up with a coating that looks like copper or gold for my 22lr reloads. Been mixing colors. I have Smokes Clear, Smokes new Translucent Copper, Some cheap crappy copper from eBay, HF red, yellow and white.
Here are some pics with combinations of some of those:
231499231500231501231502
These are PC'd cores for 22lr. These then get swaged to the proper size and shape. When I get them swaged I will take some "after" pictures and post them here.

Pics of my latest attempt at PC with Smoke4320 powders. Great looking PC. The yellow and 2nd group from left in back (lighter green) are yellow and JD Green mixed with clear. I love his new color which is translucent copper. These are for my .308, 30-30, 357/.38, 40, and 9mm.

This was my first attempt. Tin foil was a bad idea as the bullets stuck to it. 2nd attempt use a silicon baking pan with worked well.
I'll try them in my 300 Blackout this weekend.115550
I just dumped some powder into a dish and set it on my tumbler, shook it around and set it back a few times then baked them for 15 min @ 400°

115551

Here's an uncoated one, a coated one, and a 208 grn A-max for comparison.

45bpcr What weight bullet is that? Let us know how they shoot. I just picked up a Ruger Ranch rifle in 300 blackout. Thank you!

The blue wasn't cooperating the other day so I switched to the clear because it always goes on even and smooth with only a couple swirls and with the quicker clear PC grabbing onto my boolits causes less dings and scratches. I see one of my clears caught the edge when I seated it. I'll use that one for a fouler.

My throat must be very short TB. I cannot come close to seating that bullet that long in my 450!!!

No begginnneeded OSOK!! Thats actially a mix I like using a few colors. GRMPS told me to add a color that coats well to one that dosent and many times it will coat better. Well he was correct! But the color produced was not favorable..;). So I added sone vivid purple I have that also coats great and thenmet silver that dosent... resultin in this light purple / grey granite lookin’ color. It coats well but wont be repeatable when gone. I onlt had about two cups worth.

Looking good Mike. I've been on the lookout for a good 30 Luger mold. That one looks like it would be great.

Here is a little blend that I'm calling Grape Bubble Gum. This is a mix of Smoke's Traffic Purple and Jet Black. This is the first colors I've blended that had a smooth color distribution. Nicely blended. H&G 50 and RCBS 38-150-SWC.

https://i.postimg.cc/MKJckz2V/20190203_144641.jpg

This one turned out kinda cool. I'm calling it Cherry Cola. Trying to use up some HF Red, so I mixed it in with some Jet Black. The blotchy color mix makes it look fizzy. This is an LBT 402-200-WFNGC.

This first is blue, white and silver. Does anyone recognize the bullet? Its a 35 cal but i have yet to weigh it.

Smoke's Traffic Purple and Signal Blue are two that I have found to coat the best with the dry tumble method. I haven't found an orange yet that coats as well as those two colors. Anyone have any recommendations on powders to try or tweaks to tumbling (longer/shorter time, less/more/no bbs, etc) orange to get better coverage?

I have two different Yellows both are same in finish not smooth at all.

I have been working on my Powder coating process for each caliber I cast, each have there own challenge. My goal is to have no blotchy finish, 100% coated.
Bullets on left of picture, 223, with gas check, and powder coated.
Bullets in center of picture, 380, Powder coated.
Bullets on right of picture, 9mm, powder coated
The pictures really does not do it justice, they really are nice.

I was doing some mixing too!!

I really like the color I get from Purple and White W/ splash of silver to thin. But in a senior moment I used Slamin Purple. Its a dark sparkly purple then white and little Silver Metallic.

What I got Im callin Frosted Charcoal...

The boolit is from the mold lyman 452389, cal 45 185 Ga.
I started making panlube, but that way they are easier to use, there are no sticky dies.
The PC is transparent when it is cooked in the oven, but while adhering to the lead it is white.
I just throw my boolits in a tupper, a small spoonful of powder and shake two minutes. Then with a pair of tweezers I arrange them and put them in the oven.

Do you guys think locking this thread and starting a new one would be helpful ? My view is 30 pages long but I see the deleted post as well not sure what members are seeing. Post your thoughts here and if it looks like most want it locked which you still can view and a new one started I will then do a finial clean up.

Not sure if this is right but generally most of the questions I’ve seen are what bullet design, powder coat color, brand of powder, and method of application. Some members have been good about adding that info but maybe that should be an added requirement to avoid majority of questions?

25 min preheated convection oven, baked both batches at one time

50/50 purple/Kawasaki green I did two loads in the same bowl with the same powder mixture, the first batch picked up more of the purple and the second one, in the remaining powder was grey
modified (repaired) SAECO 9MM mold, when I got it someone had cut some material off the base to make a shorter/lighter boolit leaving a thin base before the lube groove. Had a friend drill out as much of the lube grooves as he could and I polished most of the remaining lube grove out.

50/50 Cardinal gloss white/semigloss black 356-120-TC

https://i.imgur.com/TFtBPPB.jpg

did in three different batches of boolits using the same powder in the bowl, not too much color variation between batches, not like the first purple/green mix :(.

I kinda like this mix, there was very little sticking, nice even coat went from .358 to .360

is it possible to have a summary of the current recommendations for powder coating at this point- reading through all the posts is great but each (well, some) of the great ideas get replaced by even better great ideas so that by the time one is done reading there is some confusion about what the recommendations actually are at this point (at least for me)
thanks

Everyone has developed their own way...there are different weather/humidity levels across America so what one PC will do on the East Coast might not work here Behind Enemy Lines (West Coast). Some use the recommended 'convection oven' and others a 'toaster oven'...the manufacturers have their recommendations for time and temperature (after the PC has melted), some do a dump in a lump/pile and bake, I like to call that method 'Production Baking' and some pick them up with nitrile gloved fingers and stand them individually to bake, still others suffering from OCD like me still tweezer them to the bake tray. Each to their own & more power to them.

I did a video of how I do them if you are interested... 'FootStompin Powder Coating Cast FWC's' ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi2gDLxNlxQ

I'm sorry, I saw that comment and forgot or got distracted & didn't answer, I'll plead 'old age forgettery' on this one.

No...I haven't had a hardness issue. This stuff was a Sherwin Williams (I think) I buy it from a local PC painting contractors shop, he gets it in 50 lb. boxes. He didn't like it because it changes hue over a large surface area. I think it just has too much clear carrier in the mix & not enough pigment, dunnoh really.
Your mixing the silver in gives it a brass look in that bottom photo, looks good too.

OK...so I have been finishing the painting job on the Pantry that I've been working on for what seems like forever. I got the Backdoor painted yesterday but the two window lights at the top had plastic trimwork (paintable) held in by 8 gold colored screws. I didn't want to paint the screw heads so I broke out the PC setup and PC'd them white with Smokes Traffic White.

Not boolits....but just another use for a great PC setup.

Did some PCing today. I have bowels of powder with BB's already to go, picked a reliable one because of the high humidity 94% and rain. Warmed my boolits before dumping in the bowel started shaking an swirling gave it 30 seconds took a look it was a no go. Recently I bought some Poly Beads at the craft shop ( heard about this here on CB ) Switched out the BB's to the poly beads and here is how they turned out.

The shiny portion of the ogive (think I’m using that word correctly) was what really got me. As you can see it passed the crush test though so PC is good.

Well, today after spraying 4-500 9mm and 380's when I was cleaning up the overspray, normally I just lift up the paper I put down to cover my table and throw it out. But today I got to thinking.... I still had a few 20 - 30 odd bullets. I also had a #5 tub sitting in the garage. Hmmmm. Why not? I poured the overspray into the tub, dumped the few oddball bullets in and swirled away (didn't have any airsoft or beads). The clunking and bumping made me cringe thinking of my beautiful bullets getting dinged and scratched. 15-30 seconds later I popped open the lid and was quite surprised at how well the coating looked!!! I loaded those into the oven and started culling my sprayed bullets looking for the ones that had thin areas. Normally these would go back into the pot and be recast. But why not shake these too? I don't normally like to double coat. I find the gloss seems to dull. But since I had already crossed over into enemy territory (lol) I decided to shake these too. There ended up being a big difference in cosmetic looks, which was to be expected, but Wow! They are definitely shootable!! Here are the pics, Not sized yet.

If I just want to quickly make some to shoot, and not show, I definitely will consider Shaking now..

A little experiment. I had Smoke's Traffic Yellow and mixed it with the last bit of Harbor freight red. It made an orange looking mix in the bag, but when I did the shake and bake, the yellow adhered much easier and the red stuck in splotches. It made a speckled egg looking coating.
It reminded me why I moved from the harbor freight pc!

For those considering buying an ES gun...

The right is pieces from best tumble effort. Single coat. Lots of thin spots and heavy spots.

The left is my first try using the Harbor Freight ES gun. Out of 50 bullets there's only 2 that had bad spots. Once I modify the "spray booth" I shouldn't have that issue again though.

I wish I had bought one when I first started!

(Both are coated using Smokes Traffic Purple)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200411/4367316190dfe18e604a55acfacf182d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200411/0bb94020420524f6c26f154e5300f69c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200411/47ae3b250f079137063c4cbb17d8db49.jpg

I mixed some of Smoke’s traffic purple and black together. I tumble coated it and when I bounced off the extra in a separate container I had some residual blue left in the bounce container. These were my rejects I was having fun with mixing colors.

I'm very new to the coating club so I am very happy with the first results. I bought a sample pack from Smoke and used the shake and bake method. Flame red, white aluminum, and jet black. All the coated bullets below were a single coat. I believe I can get the "white Aluminum" to coat a little better with a single coat. The red coats very well with a single. The black holds the powder but would either require two coats or maybe a modification of my method by adding airsoft BBs. I need some range time to finish my trials, but overall I am very pleased with Smoke's powder. My first attempts with HB white (that's all they had) were terrible, at best. This was taken with an HD camera, so every blip and speck shows. I will try a few more colors shortly. I'm thinking I need some red, white and blue as well as the copper.

I casted up 10 pounds of lee 255 grain boolits for my vaquero today. I mixed Smokes traffic purple and back together. The more I tumbled the more the colors changed and gave more of an even color mix. The first ones in my hands were some of the first few I tumbled that colors didn’t mix evenly on. These are all from the same tumbling batch without adding any more PC to my mix. The color seems to change in bright light. These are all the same boolits. You can see how the color changes in bright light with a flash. The middle photo was with no flash.

Too hot! Did you check your oven with a thermometer? I use a digital thermometer with a thermocouple in a bullet. You can tell the temp of your oven and more important the temp of your bullets. The thing will cost you about $20.00 and you can use it for other things. Drill a hole in a coated bullet and insert thermocouple, squeeze bullet down on thermocouple. Lay thermocouple on tray with bullets baking. Buy a few extra thermocouples you can monitor your temp when preheating your molds. If you don't have a p.i.d. on your casting pot a lot of them come with a probe that you can monitor your alloy temp. Preheat bullets before coating, lay the end of the thermocouple in with bullets so you don't get them to hot.

Just finished second batch. Shook them in JD Green about twice as long as the first batch. Looks like a nicer, thicker coating of powder. Put them in the oven and this time included my Taylor oven thermometer. It took a full twenty minutes to get the preheated oven up to 375 degrees F. I started timing then and turned oven off at 20 minutes. By then the temp was just below 400 F. They are cooling now. When my camera battery is charged I'll get a pic. I ordered a better camera with macro lens. But for this I'll just have to continue with Olympus pocket cam.

My first attempt at casting and powder coating. Lee 124 grain tumble lube mold.

Prior to these, I loaded up 10 rounds bare and alox lubed to see if my soft side range lead would...well...not lead. It seemed like it was going to so I picked up some black from Harbor Freight.

Seem like the ended up OK so I think ill go shoot em tomorrow.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210414/eb1eb73e2a75b87e3d8f8e104e2ee96d.jpg

Please don't take what I'm about to say as putting your work down, because that is not my intention.
The matte black from HF really needs to be applied with an electrostatic gun (ESG) for good results. Here's what that HF Matte Black can look like if applied with the HF ESG.

The HF red does better, but still isn't a really good powder.

These are moulded from RCBS 185 grain BB SWC mould. Water quenched after casting and after pc baking. Used COWW from the old days.

PC coating was complete and fairly uniform using swirl and bake method with no bb’s or lead pre-heating.

Fingers crossed there’s no barrel leading!

Then discovered what I call 'old lead' PC ... 1/2 mix of white & black gloss ... I'm done with colors now.

The color changes a bit as you refresh your PC bucket but they still look like old oxidized lead to me...

I like that old grey look too. Nice looking bullets! Well done, Sir.

I do something similar with Smoke's White Aluminum and Jet Black.

But I do still like messing with colors too.

Do yourself a big favor, measure and write down the amount of each powder you use when experimenting with colors!!!! even though you think you'll "NEVER FORGET" ---------

The HF red does better, but still isn't a really good powder.Sounds about right. It took 2 tumbles to coat and the first one looked like about 5% coverage. They work pretty good as 9mm blasters but I think I'm going to get another powder from smokes or Eastwood to shake and bake with going forward.

Looks like the good old H&G #50. That has long been a family favorite and I can attest to PC makes those work perfectly but I only shoot it in revolvers. Are those the Miha clone with the hollow base option or an original? Curious if the hollow base option might give you better results.

Those are not the H&G 50. Here is the #50 from a mold that I used to own. Pic 1 is to show the location of the heel relative to the cannelure midway down the typical wadcutter brass (it's the only decent pic I have of the as-cast bullet).

Hi, All -

Here is a pic of loaded powder coated projectiles along with a pic of a target that was shot with them on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021. These are RCBS 185 grain cast 30 cal projectiles loaded in 30-06 cases. I cast the projectiles and powder coated them using Eastwood Ford Light Blue powder coating. They were gas checked with Sage's copper gas checks. My charge was a respectable 45.2 grains of IMR 4064 with a COL of 2.925". There was no lead fouling - just the usual and customary powder residue in the barrel.

These projectiles were shot out of a 1979 vintage Rem 700. The rifle and scope were previously dead-on zeroed at 100 yards using the same charge of 4064 (45.2 grains) pushing a 168 grain Nosler Custom Competition match projectile and with a 3.30" COL.

With these powder coated projectiles, I used the very same scope setting as with the Custom Competition projectiles, and changed nothing.

To my great surprise and gratification, these projectiles produced a single clover-leaf style pattern over a 3 shot set. I never expected that type of result! I am more than pleased with these powder coated and gas checked projectiles!

I have no idea how these projectiles would perform on game. I'm not a hunter but I just wonder how they would perform. I'd like to try them out on 4 or 5 milk jugs of water just to see what happens to the projectiles on impact! My dual cavity mould has been hollow-pointed on one cavity.
