Hi folks.
Just wondering if anyone has success shooting ultra-light to light loads with a .223 with no gas checks on the boolits. In particular; gas checked style sans checks? Of course this goes out to the "non AR guys"
Thanks

Mine may not be ultra light since it's moving at near fifteen hundred feet per second . However I am using the Lyman 225462 with two grooves filled , no gas check and great accuracy with 700-x powder . A Savage and a CZ rifle like the load real well .

jim from Floyd done quite a few threads on this matter airc he started using graphite held in suspension in some lla to get the boolits out of the barrel at 400 fps or so.
anyway using the faster powders faster than unique and holding your velocity's down to 900 fps or so should give you what you want.

My Weatherby likes the Lyman 225646 boolit over 5.5 gr of ACC #9. About 12-1300fps and minute of squirrel at 50 yards.

I couldn't get accuracy without a GC.
I "had" a Ranch Dog mold TL225-50 RF that was plain based.
The best I could get was 3" groups at 50 yards.
they were going under 1600FPS.
I finally sold that mold to a FB friend who had hopes.

Now, I was able to get a GC'd Bator to group 1" and less, at 50yds

R5R mentioned Jim.
Here's the report on that.

I shoot John Calhoon 36 gr and some very old 40 gr plain base in my Savage OU turkey gun. Both are over 7 gr of unique.

I use the Lyman 225438 cast soft to duplicate the standard velocity 22LR in my .223 bolt actions and single shots. I TL them in LLA, let thoroughly dry and load over 2.2 gr Bullseye for 1050 fps. With 12 & 14" twists they do ok for casual shooting and plinking. They really shoot well with a GC in my 9" twist and even better in the 12 & 14" twists.

I shoot LEE 55gn BATOR powder coated without GC using ~3gn Titegroup and other fast powders with Dacron fill to emulate 22LR. Estimate +1200fps. <1.5" @50yd with Mossy Varmit bolt action. TrailBoss minus Dacron works very well also.
