I dropped by a local Pawn shop to drop off a knife collection they had purchased, and asked me to clean up for them with my buffing wheels I use to polish guns before hot bluing. A guy had a TC .45 Hawken, or used to be .45, bore was gone, I mean gone. Wood looked great, curl in the walnut on the forearm, bright case colors on the lock. Pawn shot did not want it, pointed him to me, I asked what he wanted for it, He said $50, I offered $30, and he broke my arm taking the money. Also had a new synthetic ramrod. I got home and dropped a pristine barrel I got of Johnson 1942 here on this forum, man did it look great. May cast up some maxi's for deer hunting, or get Roger to send me his paper patch specifics for this barrel. I have 2 .45 barrels, and 1-.50 barrel to fit it!

That old bummed out barrel is valuable. Send it to Bob Hoyt and have him bore it out to .54 round ball twist and you'll have a real shooter. Two barrels for one gun! If it's really bummed out you can go to .58 or even .60. He'll cut the twist to make the round ball sing down range. Could even make it a smooth bore, giving you a shotgun for bunnys. Don't throw it away.

That is a smoking deal. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

if you send me some 250 grain bullets that will fit in a .440 die i wil swage them up for you and they will shoot like a house afire in that barrel. i shot 250 grain .440 paperpatched and it would keep a tight group at 100 yards. that barrel is a good one. you got a steel their on that stock. also it may be a good idea as suggested to have it rebored. you could also do a .50 in 1/28 twist and shoot 550 grain paper patch in it. a larger bore roundball would be nice also.

I'll add a +1 to this. For about $100 you can have a great handling .54 rifle, or you could just have it reamed to smoothbore and jug choke it to make it a great little shotgun.

I paid $100 more than that for one in similar condition, and was happy to do it.

I put the old barrel in a corner and put a new GM LRH barrel in its place. I've never shot it......yet.

I have 2 custom Green Mtn. Barrels, drop ins that were limited runs. One is a 1", 38" long .40 with 1-48 twist, another 1-66 .451 roundball, 32", 1" flats. Both shoot the lights out on a renegade, I have been playing with a .40 bullet, about 350 grains I got the mold at a booth in Friendship, made for cartridge guns, but with soft lead, some lanolin lube and a under the slug wad, it is shooting one ragged hole at 50yds, open sights with 60 grains of Goex 3FFFG.
