If your where to buy a new 45 Auto - Which one?

I already have a few 1911's - got that covered.

Just wanted to try a new semi-plastic pistol in 45 ACP.

Not wanting to pay the $1k for a HK nor the cheaper 45's.

A little carry, and range work...

I am leaning toward the S&W MP series, over the Springfield XD and Glock....

Thanks

Though it's as big as a 1911 footprint wise, I'd pick the Glock 41 over the XD & M&P (haven't shot the XDm though).

I have a Ruger SR40 which I find quite satisfactory. It gobbles up my NOE 40-200-RFN reloads. If I felt the need, I think a SR45 would be my choice in the plastic .45 category.

Kahr CW45. About the size of an Officer's 1911, a little thinner and a LOT lighter at 1lb 10oz loaded. Butter smooth striker fired trigger and surprisingly accurate for a less than 4" barrel. Under $400.

The glock has never felt right especially the large frame in my hands. The S&W M&P and the XDM really do have point and shoot ergonomics. For me it was springfield, easier to work on if needed.

For single stack, the Kahr is hard to beat, carry one everyday.

The gen four Glock 21 is a good one. My son has one and it is a very good shooter.

My personal choice for plastic guns is the S&W MP

Of all the plastic-fantastic in .45 ACP, the M&P S&W seems the best in my hand, and can
be had with a thumb safety. With the Apex trigger parts, the trigger can be truly nice.
Hard corps 1911 guy, BUT - if I had to, I could learn to live with the M&P.

Like Bill, I'm hard corps 1911 as well - but if left with no choice I would go with the Sig P220 first and the Glock SF21 a close second. Haven't tried the S&W or Springfield.

Well, you said you had several 1911's and wanted to try plastic ?? For a little over $500 you can get a Springfield XDs in 45 acp. These things are small and lite enough for CCW use, but still put a big boolit on target well and are reliable to use as a CCW. Lots of 45 acp's out there, this is one of the smallest if not the smallest. Recoil isn't bad at all considering the size. They come in a " Kit " boxed with 2 mags, a holster, and a belt 2 mag holder. Think it's one of the best deals out there now for the price. Only down side I see with mine is 5 round mag with 1 more in the pipe for 6, a couple of shots less than I'm used to. Think 6 shots VS 8 shots isn't going to matter in the unfortunate instance it might be needed for SD. After packing this thing for more than 6 months I can say that this packs much better in lite summer clothes than a 1911 and you don't have to worry about it printing on your clothes in the same way.

I have a bit of trouble seeing how folks that claim to "be a 1911 guy" can even deal
with the *** trigger pull and the horribly wrong grip angle of the Glocks. I tell
my students that they are reliable guns, and if they fit your hand, give them a try,
but I will never own one. I hate pulling up a gun and looking at the top of the slide,
not the sight picture, and the trigger-by-Mattel is something that I just cannot
abide. I have Sigs and other designs, double/single, DAO, single, striker, etc -
have managed to come to peace with all of them but the Glock. Just not worth the
mental irritation. Several of the G .40s bounce brass off of my forehead, too,
5 rounds of that was and entire lifetime supply.

I would have to say, that if you don't mind the really high bore axis of the P220,
it works, too. Just about 3/8" too high bore axis, entirely unnecessary - again
a plus factor for the 1911 design.

For years I was ambivalent about Glocks. I didn't like the trigger and had bland feelings about the rest of the gun. The more I shot them the more I came to like them. The grip angle works for me and I adapted to the trigger. Utilitarian is about as kind as you can get when describing one. If you called them ugly I wouldn't be able to challenge that label but the reliability and durability cannot be denied.
I did my time with the 1911 platform and I know it well. I will not bash the 1911 but there are options now that didn't exist in the past.
I will say that one polymer framed, striker fired, high capacity, semi-auto pistol with a square cross section slide is about the same as the rest. If you want one of those types, just buy a Glock; the rest are just more complicated knock-offs of a Glock.

Love Life
08-21-2014, 05:34 PM
I like the 1911 and I love Glocks. I shoot each as well as the other. When switching platforms, I just have to do a bit of extra dry fire.

The grip angles on Glocks has always worked for me and when punching out the sights are already where they need to be. Same for my 1911, and Highway patrolman, and snubbie....

Practice I guess.

There is just something magical about 13 rds of stank, no safety, and easy controllability.

Love Life, thinking you shot my XDs at the get-together earlier this year. I agree, Glocks are easy to get used to, my son has a G30 and it shoots just a little better than the XDs. But for CCW, the XDs wins hands down for it's smaller mag and overall size at least with me. I packed that G30 for a year before passing it off to my son. Don't notice any difference between the two in recoil, just the weight of the XDs is a little less. I still prefer the 1911 platform to all of them, just much harder to pack a full size in lite summer clothes.

Not much help here but if I wanted the new 45 auto it would be another Colt or possibly Ruger's new 1911. Just can't get interested in a plastic .45. I have a couple of 1911's but by no means do I have them "covered". If you must have plastic I like the SIG's best, I can live with a Glock but it wouldn't be a .45.
In perusing the posts above it seems the plastic 45 has evolved in recent years, some very interesting offerings but I tend to stick with what I know.

There are a lot of choices. However, I'm a brand junky...

If it's plastic it has to be a Glock, if it's a 1911 then it has to have a Pony on it. Makes my life really easy though!!

My favorite 45 acp is still my old 70 series Colt that has more than 25k rounds down the tube and still running strong. This XDs plastic pistol has lower expectation of life than the old Colt, expect to go through several if I live that long, sure the old Colt will still be going strong long after I'm gone. The XDs sure is less weight and size to carry though.

Range report:

20-25 year old hand loads (dregs). First 4 shots at 10 yards with my new 45 XDS.

Further testing proved that this was a fluke. Grouping opened - as shooter realized he has not shot for awhile. Trigger will probably be modified with a spring kit.

Actually, it shot very well - ran the 'dregs' thru it from lead SWC (68') to military ball to Winchester Silver tips. Sights where on - magazines ran fine - just a nice running pistol.

Recoil and "small' handle - really not a problems at all. "Small' - with my magazine grip extension (Pearce) I can get all three lower fingers on the grip. I have not fired a Colt officers for a long time - but probably not much different.

With the limited shooting- looking good. And I would recommend the Springfield XDs.

Gen 4 G21 or G30, SF frame if you can.
Of course the P220 is awesome.
I have shot the M&P and like it, but not enough to spend more money on after market triggers and making as expensive as a G21. I don't trust aftermarket guts on weapons.

I have a S&W M&P45 that is very accurate (now that the trigger is improved). Its a little fussy when it comes to chambering reloaded ammunition, but it shoots well. I own a Ruger 1911 that is excellent, and a great buy for the money.
The pistol that I recommend people to look at is the EAA Witness (Tanfoglio) in 45acp. It comes with a good trigger, is accurate, well balanced, and shoots well. In addition, it can be easily changed from one caliber to another (9mm, 38 super, 40s&w, etc). Something to think about...

None, zero, zilch. Using AA#7 which doesn't burn super efficient and deposits all over the gun. Each range trip saw from 200 to 400 rds with no cleaning as I am practicing for SHTF/Zombies/Ninja attacks.

I'm shooting fast with magazine changes just cuz' and because I wanted to thoroughly ring out the gun and the Speed sights.

When I cleaned the gun after each trip, there was literally built up AA#7 on the bottom of the slide, and on the internals, bolt face, and ejection port.

I'd say 200 of those rds were my 5.0 gr Bullseye with 230 gr cast load.

The trigger on my Gen4 is very smooth and is the nicest Glock trigger I've had from the factory to date. Even better than the "4.5 lb" trigger that was on my piece of garbage Glock 41...that I got rid of.

It's a Glock, it's the real deal, I'm not surprised at the performance.
