Have some Lyman "gould" .45/70 boolits cast of some 11BHN alloy, powder coated with HF yellow. Sized down to .452 and loaded over 23 grains of H110. Don't know how fast they are actually going out of my 7.5 Blackhawk as I haven't chronographed them yet, but I have shot 2 cylinderfuls with excellent accuracy, and no leading. I have recently run this same boolit over 1800fps. out of a Marlin with no leading and good accuracy. I estimate these should be traveling something over 1200 out of the Blackhawk. I am hoping for decent expansion at this speed. I'll try to get some water jugs to test them in the next day or two, and then to the woods to try and clobber a hog with it. 113905

my Winchester/Miroku model 92 in 45 Colt loves these boolits as well. i shoot em at .457 which finger seats in a fired case and when i cast them i have a short pin that deletes the hollow point so mine come in at between 348 and 350 grain. i do not like the hollow point so i cast em flat point and they work very well ... seems like i load em over 18 or 19 grains IMR 4227 which is nearly a compressed load when loading em to a OAL of 1.600 length loaded. i also have some loaded with 30 grains GOEX 2F powder but have not shot em yet.

Hey Ted, if you have a #457191 that works great in the 45 Colt lever guns also. A little under 300 grains and usually casts out about .456" - .457". I think it's supposed to be an express boolit for the 45-90 or something, but it works wonders in the Colt as well.

I have to size them down to .452 for the Ruger. And I could get a solid pin for the mold, but the hollowpoint design might expand better at sixgun velocity. I have Ranchdog molds too, in close to the same weight, for use in 45/70 rifles. These aren't hard to size down that far at all out of this relatively soft alloy. (I tried to size some .459 boolits that were water dropped out of a lino-wheelweight alloy down to .452 once...didn't work well)

I also have the RCBS 325 grain 45/70 mold that is a plainbase, I might cast a few of those up to try for a heavy boolit in the .45 colt. It's a 2 cavity so will cast faster as well.

i figure that the 350's going around 1300 to 1400 FPS should do for what ever gets in the way. i will look round for that mold ... Lyman 457191. thanks for the tip.

I also have tried the 405 grain Lee hollow base in my Blackhawk since I posted. I happened to have some cast and sitting on the bench, what the heck,I thought, sized some to .452 and loaded those over 17 grains h110. They shot really well, too. I was kind of surprised they stabilized...

1,200fps might be a bit of an over estimation, I shoot the 300gr Lee over 22gr H110/W296 and get right at 1,200FPS out of my NMBH 7.5". I'm sure it will hammer anything it hits though.

Chronographed the gould boolit out of the .45 colt this morning, three shots averaged 1250 fps. with a hi of 1263. these boolits weigh 343 grains, coated. A snappy load out of the Blackhawk, but it handles them fine.

I had 4 rounds left after I chronographed, so I fired them offhand at 25 yards. Factory ironsights, my group wasn't as good as Bens, I got 1 3/4" center to center for the 4

Now you have me questioning my memory, I wonder if it was 1,300fps not 1,200fps with my load... Oh darn, guess I'll have to head out to the range soon to check. :)

23.0gr H110 is right on the edge of the limit there, I think that Gould boolit has a lot of it's weight in the nose and maybe less down in the case than say the Lee 300 RF would have.

I have a 340gr SSK TC boolit seated in the lower crimp groove over 22.0gr W296 and man I wouldn't want another .01th of a grain in there! These were picked up after traveling through 32" to 36" of seasoned oak firewood, out of a short barreled Vaquero. I pity the hog that intersects one of these bad boys in flight..

And the one behind him , too. 32 inches of oak? That is some deep penetration! (Eat your heart out, FBI).
