If I don't use small rifle magnum primers am I handicapping myself? I want a stout hunting load not a 357 mag level load. I am loading the Ranch Dog 190 grain. Naturally I have all primer types except small rifle magnum.

Are you shooting this in a rifle or revolver? What barrel length. Sure would help to now if you want a useful nswer...

So you have regular small rifle primers?

I'm not sure why you think you need magnum primers just because you're shooting a 357max. I shoot a 357max in a Browning Low Wall and a lot of my loads aren't with mag primers. Some powders work better with magnums but some don't. In fact, the only way to tell if one is better than the other is to load up the same load and use two different primers and compare them. I've done that and I've found that using the magnums sometimes has no advantage what-so-ever. Take you best load(s) and load some both ways and compare the results. FYI, some of my loads are really stout....really stout! You don't need that much power to kill a deer anyway. I go for what shoots the best, not the one that kicks the hardest.

Small rifle primers are recommended for use in the .357 Maximum as a result of the high peak pressure encountered, you don't need magnum's per se - roll with what you got.
