Does anyone have any info regarding the receiver screws for an early 70's Winchester 70, such as the diameter, thread size, length, etc.? I managed to destroy the front screw while bedding a new stock. I ordered a replacement screw set from Brownell's, but the front screw seems like it is too short - it goes in almost completely to the screw head before the threads catch. Did Winchester change the length of this screw over the years? A source for the correct part would be great, but I expect to buy screw stock and cut/thread as needed.

I've replaced the factory two-piece (3 screw) steel/aluminum bottom metal with a one-piece (2 screw) blued steel unit, but I don't think that is the problem; the original screw seemed to be the proper length.

Thanks,

1/4" - 32 thread for the front and rear - (1) front guard screw, 15/16" (3.3cm) long; (1) center guard screw, 15/8" (4.1cm) long; (1) rear guard screw, 113/16" (1.7cm) long. Fits Winchester Model 70 triggerguards.

Call Brownells and speak to a tech. They may have a source for longer ones. They stock them for Rems. but I can't find them for Winchesters.

These are the long ones for Rems http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/triggers-parts/trigger-guard-parts/trigger-guard-screws/long-triggerguard-screws-prod1273.aspx

Compare your damage screw to the new one to see if it is a different length.

Excellent! Thank you!

Unfortunately, I lacked the foresight to keep the old screw...
