i was planning on getting a 338 federal, but some money issues:twisted: came up and the federal was not going to happen. while waiting around:coffee: i came up with the 50-110 sharps in my tc encore. (MGM Barrels makes it). i was wondering if the sharps kicks at all when loading for smokeless powder. i shoot a 50cal flintlock and a 50x209 encore, neither of them bothers me. i had a stroke, so the right half of my body only gets about 25% that works:confused:. i realize that a 1000 yard gun it ain't, but for 100yards(maybe 150) i could shoot a deer/black bear with it. weight doesn't bother me or my utv:mrgreen: and shooting one handed, the barrel can/can not have a velcro strap on the boggs 3 legged stand. the gun should weigh 8or 9 llbs.(not sure?) i'm going to get a lyman cast bullet book soon.
it will probaby take a year or so, but this one i WANT.:twisted:
50-110 sharps will have a 26-27" heavy factory barrel(.850") with a scope
465gr-590gr bullets(what i have seen so far)
smokeless powder

my questions are...

1. how hard does the sharps kick? like an 30-06 or like a 338 rum(please don't let it be like this:veryconfu)

2. what is a good smokeless powder?

3. i have some pure lead(for 50cal flintlocks), is this alright for bullets?

4. should i use gas checks?

5. should i use rifle or magnum primers?

thanks!!! i will add more if it don't kick like a 338 rum.

Well, I've fired a 50-140 built on a Ruger #1 and a turned down .50bmg barrel.

All I can say is, Never again. Not no, but Hell No.

I have an 1886 in 50-110 wcf which is close enough to compare. I shoot 325gr. and 450gr. bullets in it and have shot 570gr through it. nobody says you have to run it full throttle. I do use gas checked bullets and IMR4198, RL-7, or IMR3031.

If you're talking about the 50/90 Sharps (2 1/2" case) then i can tell you about recoil.......it's very heavy with full cases of BP and bullets weighing over 500 grains. It's not a good case for smokeless loads and you will get many "off-sounding" shots. I'd recommend reduced charges of BP and felt wads used to make up the space in the case. I use soft cast bullets, for expansion on big game, but the 12 lb. rifle is a handful and a poor choice for smokeless powder or a light contender or Encore. My load uses 100 grains of 1 1/2fg. Swiss black powder.

might just be tempted if it were me and i wanted a 50 on my encore platform ... i would get that snappy new barrel in 50-70 GOV. that will get your 50 itch scratched and if BP is something on the horizon ... then it would be very manageable in the lite encore platform. also the smokeless loads would have much less room to flutter round in under maybe a lighter boolit then called for in a 20 or 24 inch twist 50-110 sharps or the 50-2 1/2 sharps straight ... [same cartridge].

i believe i would opt for a 30 or 36 inch twist rate as well so i could play with the lighter 350 or 450 grain boolits.
