HRA BTH henry 44-40 boolit

I have a new Henry and need some mold advice. The lands seems to be .100 from the case mouth, the bbl slugs at 429 col must be less than 1.605 to function. With a case length of 1.305 this leaves .300 max for the nose length with .080 of a driving band I think. I will shoot black powder in this rifle(seems like the right thing to do). I am thinking the 43 205j form accurate molds will work well if the gg is big enough. I have fired several boolits from a lee 200 428 2 gg mold that drops at .430 with no leading but accuracy is poor i think due to the long throat.

I shoot these from my .44 russians, specials, and mags. Not currently loading .44-40s, but I intend to use them when I do come back to them one day. It's from NOE:432 200Gr. RF 4 cavity PB (44-40)

the lube groove is nice and big and they pan lube without a fuss.

With Holy Black, the bullet you want is Accurate 43-215C.

After reading the instructions on the accurate website I turned a boolit around backwards and chambered it then measured .130 in front of the mouth of the case. Will the 43-215c make the jump ok or should I look at a design with a driving band. i think i want some clearance for fouling but .130 seems like a lot.

My Winchester '73 and Marlin '94 .44-40's have about the same amount of clearance and shoot the 43-215C mentioned above very well.
Here's a target fired at 200 yards from a benchrest....the majority of the 10 rounds are within 2 MOA :-)

At the time I was calling it the 427098 Modified since the profile follows the original .44-40 bullet but with added lube capacity.

My 100-yard iron sight .44-40 groups look like that. I guess I need to tighten the nut behind the buttplate!

The 43-205J, if crimped in the crimp groove, will make the cartridge too long to feed from the magazine....with a 1.29" case = 1.656"oal; as compared to 1.595" max oal to feed in the Henry.

The rifle had a 4X scope on board when that target was made a few years ago. In my experience it is pretty tough to beat a good b.p. load with smokeless in the .44-40.

I missed the oal being to long. I plugged my numbers into mountain molds program and came up with a similar boolit but the small lube groove scared me a little if the 43-215c is working for you I think I will give it a shot. I am getting reasonable accuracy with the lee but only for 5 rounds not enough lube I think. Thank you all for the help.

Well the accurate 43-215c is working out very well. I am getting groups now instead of patterns but I think the sights are regulated for 44 rimfire because this thing shoots about 8 inches high at 75 yards but this is ok I am happy to reduce the load to match the sights.
