View Full Version : Forming 8x58rd from 7,62x54 brass

As 8x58rd brass is relatively expensive i try'd forming some from 7,62x54.
I did fire-form them in my rolling block and they formed nicely.

Now the problem, because the 7,62x54 brass is (4mm) shorter the bullet opening after firing is .340 instead of .327 with orgional brass.
So this will stress the brass substantially when i seize it back to .323 to except the bullet.
I have a 8x58rd die-set on the way so i can full seize the brass, but i'm thinking that only neck seizing would be a better option.?
Also i got an idea to use 7,62x54 blanks, as those have a longer neck that could solve the problem.?
Or are there any other cases that i can try to form to 8x58rd.? the .303?

Just wondering how others are dealing with this problem. any tips are welcome.

Or are there any other cases that i can try to form to 8x58rd.?The parent case for the 8x58R Danish Krag is a 45-70. For a 8x58R Sauer - there is no parent case

I have seen the 7.62x54r blanks and instantly thought of 8x58 cases but I don't have one to try

Blank cases are generally not as strong as regular ammunition cases, so loading them to full power is a risk. try cross sectioning a fired blank case and a fired standard case to compare construction before using them.

The 45-70 is just a little short when formed to the 8 X 58Rd and causes no problems. 45-90 is the best but price is quite a bit more. Buffalo Arms does have formed 8 X 58Rd but price again is high.
The 45-70 does not bulge above the rim like your picture of the 7.62 X 54 does.
The Lee 8 X 57 Collet die can be used to size just the neck of the case and works well.

i.ve used starline 45-90 cases, they are a bit stiff. as a first step i used a 40-65 die so i didnt have to put so much strain on the 8-58 rd die. they fireformed great. on some rifles both the rim and or neck has to be trimmed. i annealed the neck as the last step. then fireformed.

Turning the belt off a belted magnum case and forming in a 8x58r sizing die is not that hard. The attached pic is from a 7mm mag.
The belt and neck turning turning and I did on a wood lathe. Haven't had a chance to test yet but others have done it successfully.113597

Another alternative to un-belted magnum brass might be the 7.5X55 Schmidt Rubin case.
They are still a little short but the head is close to the right size and they are available in several brands as well as the GP 11 berdan cases.

So far I have been using 8x56 Hungarian brass and .329 Lee boolit. just loaded some .327 noe 215 gr but have not shot them yet. I use 8mm lebel dies but they do squish the neck down way too much so I'm working on a neck sizing die only. I want to try a Lee 8mm mauser collet die.

Currently i have some 20 factory cases of 8x58rd. I'm using them with a Lee .329 bulled and black powder.
That works fine, but i want to switch to smokeless with a (copper coated not jacketed)) .323 bullet.
After firing, the neck opens to .330 so i'm afraid that when i seize the factory case back to .323 the brass will fail after a few shots.
So that is why i'm looking for a cheap source of brass that i can form myself.

I will defenetly get a Lee 8 X 57 Collet die, thanks for that tip.
Yesterday i made some calls for 7,62x54 blanks, but they are hard to get over here, and it seems that only steel cases are available.
The 7,5x55 i can probably get for free, so i will give those a try as well.

7.5 x55 is rimless so I don't think that will work. I don't have a 8x57 lee collet die yet, so, I'm not sure if its going to work, but it looks like it should ( and the case is very close to the same length ). I will keep you posted if I get one before you.

The 7.5 X 55 is rimless but shooting a single shot may allow the empty case to be removed with fingers.
As an alternative you might be able to install a crescent ring or other external snap ring in the extractor groove.

I size my 8X58RD all the time with the 8X57 Mauser collett die and it works well. Leaves just a little bit of the neck unsized and this might help center the cartridge in the chamber. I do not use much pressure on the press handle when sizing with the collet die so it leaves the inside of the neck just a little larger, then I use a Lyman M die to expand the neck and open it up to receive the boolit. I am trying to not work the neck too much.
