i saw a video from The Ammo Channel on youtube a month back about using matches for gunpowder and for repriming the primer, so i decided to try it.

here are his videos for the "match" 38 spl, Video 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gYPdNAp9Q0&list=PL1-1JVPGcSzg0HuM2q7_WhlMifQG5bgoi) and Video 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMGYUmYLhAo&list=PL1-1JVPGcSzg0HuM2q7_WhlMifQG5bgoi).

i resized the brass, collected the primers and removed the anvils then flattened the firing pin dent out with a flat punch as best i could. glock fired primers would be a good choice as they aren't very deep into the metal. i used about 30 red bird strike anywhere matches and cut the white part off with a razor blade. i crushed them up into a powder and was able to put about 0.02-0.03gr worth into the primer cup. i pressed it flat with a punch and cut a small piece of paper to go over the powder. i put the anvil back in and seated the primer into the sized case.

once all that was done to 3 primers i crushed up what was left of the matches and got 8.8gr of "gun powder". i split them up into 2x 4.4 charges, one for the match primer and one for a dominion small pistol primer. i used a 158gr bullet and seated and crimped as normal. hopefully i will get to the range this weekend to see how they go in my ruger blackhawk. then a good cleaning afterwords as it may be corrosive.

anyhow here are some pictures of the process.

got back from the range and everything went well, pretty much like how it did with The Ammo Channel's loads. i suspect around the same velocity as his did, 400-550 FPS.

it was fun to mess around with, and would work in a pinch if for some reason you couldn't find primers or powder. but even then i would sooner mess around with stealing powder from other bullets then crush up matches all day!

video of 2 rounds going off.

The lee C358-158 SWC with ben's red lube and a Hornady gas check.

I used a soft alloy and the wrong nose punch so they sometimes deform like the top cartridge in the last picture

Nice experiment. Where can you find strike anywhere matches now-a-days? I have not seen them for many years.

The ammo channel guy used normal matches and cut up bits of the striker strip, but that's alot of extra work. Strike anywhere matches are avaliable at most hardware/outdoor stores in Canada. I got 500 for $4 tax in.

The other option for the primer is using caps for cap guns.
