IMR 4227 Powder

LGS has had no problem keeping 4227 powder on the shelf but I've never used it. I'm working on load development for the 300 Savage, 35 Rem and 35 Whelen and also load for 30-30, 32 WS, 30-06 and 45 Colt. Looks like it would work for my 45 Colt hunting loads in place of 296 but I was wondering if it would work in place of 2400 for my plinking loads in 32WS and 30-30. Not much data for 4227 in the rifle cartridges I load but my shooting buddy loves it in his 22 Hornet.

Its very comparable with 2400, more position sensitive in colder temps. I shoot it in my military 30 cals with good success. I prefer 2400 but can't find it. Check out the Harris load sticky.

I would use a filler in the larger bottle neck cases. I tried it in the 35 Whelen and I had hangfires, that was IMR 4227 many years ago. It works well in 357 revolver and heavy boolits-195 gr.

+1 on the filler. Sometime with heavy for cartridge cast bullets that are used at the top end loads with 4227 the filler may not be needed unless extreme angle shooting (45 +/- degree) is done.

Lyman 49th shows 16.5 to 22 grains for 30-30 Winchester. I'd guess that the load info is going to be in Lyman 48th and 49th edition load manuals.

IT's supposed to be better for plainbase loads, never tried it for that myself.

I picked up a couple of pounds, probably at the same store, and for similar reasons and cartridges. The best load with the 45-70 Sharps the other day at NTSA was with IMR 4227. There are quite a few published cast rifle loads, though I did not see any for .32 WS. Lyman even lists the 30-06 potentially most accurate load as a 311299 over 29 grains of IMR 4227. I figured I could at least burn it up in my .357 revolver if it did not work out in the rifles. I have some loaded and ready for testing in 7.62x54r, .32 Remington, and .30 Remington for when it cools off a little.

I usually shoot Red Dot or 2400 in my 308 win sized cases. But have recently got turned onto 4227. Wow!!! Both my 308 and 7mm-08 really like the stuff.

I happened across a few lbs of 4227 a while back that had been sitting on a shelf at a lgs since the 1980's I bought it all for 15$ a pound .ive never tried it in rifle loads but ive used it in 357 mag loads worked ok but I prefer win 296 . I do however really like it for 32 h&r mag and 327 fed mag,it shoots great but dirty as hell .I stumbled across some 9mm 115 fmj data with 4227 so I loaded some up and tried them out yesterday and it was horrible .im pretty sure it was 8.8 gr and a lot of them didn't even have enough umph to work the slide on my ruger sr9c. but in my opinion its a decent revolver powder.

I shoot mil bolt matches with a 03A3. Load is 314299 sized .311 over 21.0/4227 for ~1650. I shoot very good scores and groups @ 100. Loob is FWFL.

It works well in 30-30/32 Win Spl, however I prefer 3031 in them for top end boolit loads, especially in the 32.

#1 on using it in the 44 mag. It was my go to powder for cast in that cal. along with unique. I'm going to give it a try in 35 whelen with a 280 gr. flat base boolit since i can't find 2400 around locally.

I haven't found a powder that gives better accuracy in 35 Rem with RD's GC'd, using Ranchdog data.

Loaded 24, 25, and 26 gr. of imr 4227 behind a 358009 FB boolit in 35 whelen with a half gr. dacron filler. That should be 1650 fps to 1700 plus. Hope to try it this weekend!

The stores near me must be on the same supply chain as yours are. 4227 is about the only powder suitable for the .44 Mag that I can ever find in stock.
It does work pretty well in that role. I use it under the Lee 430-310 and get just under 1100 fps out of my 4 5/8 SBH. That load isn't super consistent out of the revolver, but it settles right down out of a 20" carbine.

Well i did shoot the 4227 today in my whelen and got terrible groups. I don't blame the powder though cause i got the same results with 4759 the other day and it shoots great with my gc boolits. I think this pb boolit is stipping the lands. I've got some learning to do as it shoots great with 12 gr. of unique with the pb.

One of my most-favored powders for 45 Colt. 250 gr. RNFP or SWC with 18 to 20 gr. (max) will shoot well for peacemaker repros. Ruger-only loads can go higher, but 20 gr shoots WELL in my flattop Ruger on the small frame. 4227 smells good, too! You will have unburned kernels, though. Seems to like a heavy crimp and hot charges for best burn.......
