Hello fellow cast bullet shooters and casters.
I have 3 military rifles (mausers) .
#1 Moroccan FN built .308 carbine.
#2 Yugo M48 8X57 98k short rifle. .323
#3 93 spanish 7X57.

I am using Lyman's 311291 in the .308 rifle, If i do my part it will group into
2" at 100 yrds using a 2X scope.
I would like to find a bullet of this design for the 8mm and 7mm. I believe the
311291 is what is known as a bore riding nose design.
I have tried non bore riding nose design in .22-250 , .243, 30-o6 with no
accuracy success, (group is more of shot gun pattern than a group.)
On one of these threads a replier mentioned sizing the nose of bullet to
bore size , how successfull is this procedure??
My bullet metal is 1/3 rd linotype and 2/3rd wheel weights.
any thoughts and suggestions appreciated.
I sure enjoy this site.
a lot of knowledgable posters
thanks

The standard Lee 175mm 8mm boolit is a bore rider that many have had good success with. Their 7mm 130 grain is the same boolit scaled down. I have both moulds but haven't gotten around to trying the 7mm yet. I only have a short throated 7mm Remington Magnum in that bore size. Most old 7mm military rifles have long, generously sized throats. That will affect your results. Generally the closer you can come to filling that throat with the chambered boolit, the easier it will be to get it to shoot well.

I have a Spanish FR8 in 308, a reworked Mauser with funky sights. It shoots cast bullets well. It is spec'd for modern 7.62 NATO ammo, so the action is strong.

...............Most those old military 7x57's are throated for the original 172gr RN bullet. I have the RCBS 7mm-168 and the Lyman 150gr Loverin (forget the mould number) and they both shoot very well in all my 7mm milsurps. I do not have the Lee 130gr design but a friend with a military M1902 Rem RB does well with it using 700X for powder.

The RCBS design is a bore rider, so you have to fit the nose in addition tot eh drive bands to the grooves. I would for sure slug your Spanish 7mm before ordering a mould for it. As I understand, some of them can run a bit out of bounds in measurements.
