I am loading 180gr boolits in .303, 7.62x54, and 7.5 swiss. All medium sized .30cal cartridges. Am looking for medium velocity, 1800+fps. Am doing well with 2400 and R7, but would like to try surplus powder on a small scale. Here is a list that Pat's is showing for their inventory. I should be able to buy a single can at the GSO show just to get started with:

POWDER: WC844,WC844T, WC846, WC846T
Plus WC748, H4831SC, WC297 Pistol, Russian 45 Auto pistol powder

Are any of these especially good, or among the best, for my purposes?

From my experience the ball powders take a little more pressure to burn optimally. 844 works real good in the 30-30 but at the upper end - higher load density. 30-30 of course being a smaller case that those you mentioned. I've not had good consistent success with the surp ball powders in those cases. Maybe some others have. I have not. There are too many good, traditional loads that work so much better - 2400, 4227, 4198, 3031, 4895....

That does not mean that the surp ball powders are not good. They work better with condums.

id about bet that wc297 would work great with cast bullets at those speeds. Ive never used it but have a couple jugs ordered right now. Ive used wc820 for lots of cast rifle loads and its worked real well but the slower speed of 297 might be a tad better.
