Does anyone know what size piano wire is use to make the trigger spring for Remington rolling blocks?

I've always used nominal .049", but never actually mic'd it.

Will the wire have enough spring to it or must it be tempered?

I've never heat-treated one, the wire is already spring temper. use caution cutting it--it is hard enough to notch most cutters. Works best if the finished spring doesn't have any scratches or notches from the ppliers used to bend it (I use smooth-jawed needle-nose pliers, when I remember where I put them).

Use a heavy paper-clip for practice, and to get your pattern. Bend the loop for the screw, then bend the spring arm. Easy-peezy. And if you mess up, well, the stuff is cheap and comes in long rolls--who will know if it took you 4 or 5 tries to get it right? ;-)

Coffeecup Thanks for the information. Cheaper then buying the spring kit and I will have enough to work with.

if you use a small file to grove around the spring, and then kind of snap it, it won't ruin your cutters.

And that is why they call them a spring, they are heat treated to a specific required hardness, if you heat it, it will most likely be done for.
