Went out a finally shot my Rem 7400 at 200 yards with my favorite Cast bullet load. Its the Lee 170 gr GC'd design which has proven very accurate in my 30-30 and 300 Blk out as well. Load was 40 gr IMR 4895 runnin about 2365 fps in mixed cases that I normally just shot at 100 yards and get 1" or less as far as accuracy, so since I plan on using the load for deer this year I needed to see where they group. Largest spread was 2.960" minor group was 2.265" ! I'll take this kind of accuracy with any load at 200 yards!:bigsmyl2: POA was center of bull.

PS the target was used - taped holes are 8x57mm !

That's some great shooting and a super load! I always wondered about the 7400's capabilities with cast. Were those single loaded or from the magazine?

I put a slight crimp on them so I can feed them from the mag. Found if I didn't I'd get some set back. The bullet is round nosed enough so they feed great. This 7400 was in great shape when I got it - shot very little - probably many years in a safe- looked brand new!:bigsmyl2:

Yep love the '06 had a bolt gun for years! This Rem 7400 is so much easier on the shoulder even with heavy loads! Heck don't even have a recoil pad on it![smilie=l:

That makes 2 or 3 7400's i've read about shooting cast now. I almost bought one when they came out in 35 whelen.
Looks like a good load and good shooting too!

I just finished restoring a 7400 today in 30-06 and haven't shot it (ever). I do have that exact bullet, and some 4895 powder, and think i will try that load in a few days or so! Great shooting and look forward to comparing. I was eyeballing a receiver mounted Williams peep sight earlier...

Thanks for posting and i will share my results when i have them.

Gun Nut 45/454, are you using a small base die to size your cases? I found I had to switch over to be absolutely sure that cartridges would chamber in my rifle. I had some cartridges that the bolt didn't close on. No problems since switching.

i realize this question was addressed to gun nut, but i also have a 742 in 280 rem and never had a problem with my brass fl sized. This includes shooting oncefired purchases. I do have a 280 sm base die, just never found a need for it....i would be suprised if the 7400 needed it in 30-06 as the calibers are so similiar as far as case dimensions.

Nope just full length size! Never had a problem with chambering. If your having problems I'd suggest a real good chamber scrubbing! I due run mine quite wet with lube though !:bigsmyl2:

I tried this load and it works fair in my rifle. I dropped the charge back to 39.5 and it will shoot VERY good now. I was looking for a load that would get above the 200 mark and this works really well. Thanks for posting this.

I have a 311413 that i plan on using in an 06' and this is encouraging. I am anxious to come up with a good long range cast load

Yea 40 gr is my load as it was what got me to full function in my 7400, never really worked up the load other then that. It shot very well right off the bat so I didn't feel the need to mess with it. With my alloy they drop between 178-180grs and I do sort for wt before I load, try to get within .5gr in 20 round loadings. I also have the 150 gr version of this mold and have to use 42 gr to get it to get function and they run alittle over 2400 fps which seems to be alittle to fast for my alloy so they don't shot any where as accurate as the 170 gr.

If you get much faster than 1,600 fps with the 311413, my experience with that mold is that you won't be a " happy camper ".

Stay under 1,600 fps and it shoots great.

If the weather cooperates I'll through some the 150 gr Lee's at a target at 200 yards just to compare it against the 170 grs! Who knows I might get a surprise!

Donka. Do you think the point of the nose disrupts the accuracy? It's got quite a bit of bearing surface and you'd think that it would shoot pretty good.

Shooting mine in a custom (I built it ) 98 Mauser with 1-10 twist. Thanks for the data. Now I have my deer load for this rifle.

My son has a 742, we found perfect cycling with 35gr H4895 with the Lee 170gr. We have not chronographed the load however.

I have to get on this i have a 742 that has less than 200 rounds through it probably not much more than 100, I have a keg of 4895 and a Lee 309-170rf time to get loading

My load for the sons 742 is a nice light shooting load that should keep the rifle shooting a long time, very easy on the receiver.

I have a 742 in 280 Rem and use mid range loads as well. No sense beating the receiver any more than you have to. I recently restored a 7400 in 30-06 and still feel no need to max out the load even though they improved the receiver. Let's face it, a medium/low load in a 30-06 is still very dangerous concoction!
