My brother just got an early steel frame model 39 S&W 9mm in his shop with a broken extractor. He is having difficulties finding one, anybody have any leads or ideas?

Thanks

I know the same parts problem exist with the early model 52's. There was a guy making the early extractors for the 52's. I don't know if the extractor is the same between a 39 and 52 or not. If so I would check out some of the Bullseye pistol forums.

I believe the Model 39 and 59 extractors are the same. Check Gun parts corp in west hurley New York. Brownells, and also Smith and Wesson may have them. Is it an early enough 39 to have the dust cover on it also

Thanks for the tips, I'm not sure on the dust cover, I'm about 750 miles from it right now.. :) Gun Parts doesn't have any, It's a 2 year only item from what I have been told. The 39-2's got a much beefier extractor that stayed it use for 30 years.

Three gens of extractors on the 39/59 family of S&W semiautos. By the 459 and similar
era guns they had finally banished the extractor issues, it seems.

I've got a model 39 slide with the lollipop rear sight, with the extractor installed, in my parts bin. Finish isn't fantastic, but it's not pitted. $65 shipped if you want to go that route.

Justin, I am not at all familiar with the 39's, does the slide you have use this early oddball extractor? The fellow who owns it looked for an early one for years because it was "just like dad had". I think he probably paid plenty, and it broke after only 2 rounds. He would prefer to keep it totally stock, but a later slide may be an option. Thank you for the offer, I will run it by him either way.

If the slide can be modified without too much work to take the later design, it should
be more durable, in addition to being more available.

That was a thought too Bill, but it doesn't look so easy in this case. The slot for the original is ridiculously long compared to newer models. I have to determine just how "original like dads" it has to stay. The gun is in minty condition, and I suspect he paid a fair bit for it.

I'll see if I can post a pic. I also have a few other oddball parts too. Perhaps other extractors. I'm not well versed in these either. I had a 659, 25 years or so ago. I can't say that I miss it.
