Hi Everyone, I was out at some of the local Pawn Shops today and ran across a box of Hornady Swaged LRN .452 45acp's.
After closer inspection I've noticed that instead of the normal heavy Lube I've grown accustom to seeing there seems to be just a White powder. It doesn't taste like cane or powder suger.....lol...SO, It must be lube..or oxidation? Maybe I have something I could try the Shake and Bake Powder Coating with Here? has anyone used these before? I picked them up for all but free so I thought even if they don't work for me some one could use them. Here are some Pictures. Please give me your thoughts..

Yep. That rolled finish on the side and the white stuff is for lube. I'd load a couple and see how they fly. I'm sure they are fine.

:D Looks like the bullets that a friend used to shoot for practice in his 45 ACP.IIRC,he had about 15k of those at one time.He was most satisfied with them.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Thanks Guys, I sacrificed one just to see how hard it was and there very hard. So I don't think I'll have any problems particularly now that I know that's lube on there....:bigsmyl2:

Hornaday makes the best commercial cast boolits that I have used so far (which isn't a lot of different brands). I don't know what that powder is though, definitely lube, but what kind? I dunno. I think it is some kind of magic fairy dust that fell from the Gods.

I loaded several Hornaday 240gr LSWC for my .44 special. They did a fine job over a good charge of AA#5. Unless it is a defective lot, or you have odd lands and grooves, I think your gonna like them! I still prefer my own cast boolits, but I wouldn't have a problem loading a bunch of those up.

If hornaday would sell a mold and reveal their lube to the general public, I'd buy one and make them myself.

Swaged, not cast. Correct?

I have loaded and shot many boxes of them. The white powder is the lube like others have said. They load well and shoot great. Do not tumble them in the lyman red walnut media to remove the "white corrosion". They come out ugly red. Live and learn.

Swaged, yes. I used to shoot their wadcutters, hollow base. They shot great and didn't lead at all. Nice boolits. I'll bet they shoot good. I'm not sure anybody has figured out exactly what the powder lube is, but it works real well. Mike

Here's a link to Hornady MSDSs.

Looks like the lube might be a mix of Moly disulfide and Zinc oxide but that's a guess based on what I'm seeing in the documents.

That's Hornady's dry lube. Swaged; not cast. I've shot hundreds of them. They work great.

I assumed that it was mica....I know some people were dusting their liquid lubed boolits with mica to keep the dies clean. I won't argue with the msds however.

At one time, they were pretty inexpensive and it was worth my while to shoot them instead of spending a day casting and sizing. I had no problem with them and I enjoyed good accuracy in both the 45 ACP and the 38 Special at standard velocities.
