Are all turkey/fish deep firers the same and adequate for smelting? I found a used on (38000 BTU) is that enough?

Should be fine. I think some are rated higher. Just don't use the aluminum pot. Get a cast iron or steel pot for your smelting. An aluminum pot will FAIL at some point. Brad

An outdated 25 lb propane cylinder cut in half makes a great smelting pot. I cut mine about an inch or so above bottom radious and it will hold 100 lbs or so safely. I cut a 3 inch ring from tank also to act as a heat shield and support ring also. Theres still enough of the tank for one more but the valve would have to be removed and the hole plugged with a pipe plug. These are a god steel tank and they really do make a nice pot.

Some of the legs might not be strong enough to support 100# or more of molten lead so be careful.

Just curious what do you cut it with? I'm guessing a torch?

Try this for a safer way.

If you take the valve assembly out and flush with water, do I need to be concerned with sparks. I would like to cut on a horizontal bandsaw.

Take the valve out (the most difficult part of the whole operation, those things are in TIGHT!), rinse out with water and stand upside down for a couple of days (LPG is heavier than air so any remaining gas will fall out) then cut away. I use an angle grinder with a thin cut-off wheel. I haven't heard of anyone blowing one up yet by cutting it like this.

I used one of those helium tanks used in those party packs that you can inflate a bunch of balloons for a kids party. Just cut it in half, and I use the bottom half. Should have kept the top half, too.

Also check at your local auto A/C shop.

Freon tanks should also work.

Nice! My search has ended, I have one of these in my garage. Did you use a saw-saw or an angle grinder to cut yours?
