Came home with a new Ruger No.1 in 45-70 today. Did the usual, slugged it, no surprises there. Looked over the chamber, I have a concern about the throat. I does not seem to have one, or a very short one. Is this normal? Might have trouble with a Lee mold. I've got to look for a compatible mold around 400-405 gr.. Any flat nosed molds out there being used successfully in a No. 1 ?

Congrats, I've always admired the #1. 45-70 is especially nice.
Take a look at the RD 460-350 (now made by NOE) but it was designed for the Marlin. Bore-riding section may be a bit fat. Sounds like slugging and a chamber cast are in order.

I had to chamfer the throat on my #1, it wouldn't chamber any of my cast bullets until I did that.
Is an easy job to do and well worth the time an money invested !

I have three #1 45-70s
two are Lyman Centiniels
and one is a #1S
They like the 457483 bullet

I wouldnt do much of anytjing till I seen how it performed and worked. My one firle has no throat just an angled lead right off the case mouth and it shoots exceptionally well. I shoot all black powder loads and soft cast bullets in this rifle. One plus to the short throats is there are no grease grooves exposed when touching the rifling. Load and shoot it some see what it does. These short leads also work very well with bore riding Paper Patched bullets ussually

This is what the throat on my #1 looks like -

112543

For best accuracy I have found that a 457193 sized to .453" and patched up to .464" to fit a fired case gives me the best accuracy. Mine slugs a hair over .458" and I don't own a mold that drops larger than .458", thus the addition of paper.

I always seem to get myself into these dilemmas. I have been looking over the NOE and Accurate molds for one than would allow me to seat to the crimp groove and still match or come close to the minimum O.A.L.'s published. I found this one http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=46-405G-D.png . Very little if any bore ride on the nose, still would have to seat 0.045" deeper than minimum O.A.L., but I can use the suggested start loads minus 10%, work back up. Was trying to find a gas check version too, but at those pressures, won't be necessary. I'm referring to the Lyman 49th data.
The Lee's will definitely not work. I'm going to order this one, unless any of you guys can point out a fault there might be in trying it.

Like CPL Lou mentioned, I might see what Manson has in a do it yourself hand reamer.

Yeah... I left the store thinking this is going to be a no brainer, not like my M95 or K31 hassles... duh.

This is my first really heavy caliber bullet mold, so, should I limit the cavities to two?

You're right, didn't have my thinkin' cap on last night. I got enough info from the guys to let me know I didn't get a lemon, it's just they way they make them.

Is this an older #1 or a new one?

Mine was built around 2000, it has throat long enough to chamber 500 gr. cast set out to increase BP capacity. Shoots really nice groups with the OEM sights and me using my standard trifocals on 69 yo eyes. great rifle.

The one I got last year has enough throat for most cast bullets. I think the older guns did not.

Mine's brand new, off the shelf at Cabela's on Saturday 08-02-2014. A proper test will have to wait until I can make a chamber length gage. Nobody has a Hornady modified case in 45-70 in stock. I have the taps to make my own. Just need to get a fired case first , and a cast boolit.
