William & Lyman peeps have the same hole spacing but the bases are not interchangeable. Mauser receivers can be case hardened. Demel tool the top layer can get you to softer steel underneath. It is paramount to get the holes lined up and square to the receiver and front site. You can also file the inverted 'V' front site to a blade which makes it more useful. If you Mauser has a front site hood find the peep aperture that is the same size as the hood when you site in. That way you can quickly line up on target. Something to think about.

I hope this helps,

Here's a Lyman SME and a scout scope on my FR8 (M98 Mauser). I put Lyman SMEs on M91, M93, M95s, M96s and M98 Mausers all the time......and have for years. I usually replace the front sight with a post (available from Brownell's) or with modify the front sight base for an M14 sight. Note the top 3 M91s have SMEs. The M95 to the right has a Redfield sight. Have a couple others but no pictures right now.

Here is some pics of My Super shooting "Turked" GEW98 I wanted old receiver sights to add to the patina The Lyman Globe Target sight ; well, yes, it was forgiven.... in it's new state...... but it Increased my accuracy & enjoyment many times over. I am always thrilled shooting it with 62 year old eyes & sometimes seeing 1 ragged hole groups at 50 yards!:-o

BTW I lucked out my receiver wasn't super hard and it drilled normally. ( also this receiver sight was for a 1903 but fit right on for the mauser.)
I actually will be posting one for sale soon in the WTS area

I have a S&K scout mount with a Leupold FX-II 2.5x28 scout scope on my '41 byf RC K98 Mauser, which gets me 1 1/2" groups at 100yds with Prvi Partizan 196gr sniper ammo, and I have Mojo sights on my 1912 Chilean 7.62x51 Mauser, which got 3" groups at 100yds with German DAG surplus ammo.

Larry did you take the org. front sight off of your FR8 or get the rifle with out it? I would like to get one to go on the extra 7x57 bbl. that I have for my FR7

I always leaned towards receiver or peep sights ever since, as a kid, I shot my uncle's peep sight equiped Remington 22 rifle. They are natural pointers and easy on older eyes.

I picked up a Husqvarna 6.5x55 on an FN 98 action quite a few years ago and it had a receiver sight I'd never seen before. Maybe one you will recognize it and give me some feedback.
