View Full Version : Serious Thoughts on a 41 Mag mould-I will Honcho

475/480

First off, this will be my 1st deal to Honcho thru Lee.
Also I doubt we will have enough interests to get 25 buyers in a 41 Mag mould,so we will be spending close to $65-$70 for a 6 cavity mould.
If we do not get 25 orders,Lee has a $100.00 setup fee that will be split between all buyers.

My thoughts on a heavy 41 mag mould--
Weight-265 gr
Alloy-Wheel Weight
Length-.775"
Noselength-.425 ,this will fit Ruger and SW revolvers
Front Band Dia -.409
Front Band Length-.100
Body Diameter- .411-.412
Nosewidth-MEPLATE- 75%
Crimp Groove length- .055"
Body Band Length .0675"
Gas Check Shank Length-.120"
Gas Check Shank Dia.-.3925
Groove Angle- 45 degrees
I do not have a design sheet from Lee,there may be more spec's needed, feel free to help with design information. Most of these numbers came off of Dan's (MM) site.

So What does everybody think???

At first blush (meaning I am going to go plug all your numbers into Mt Molds so I can look at the picture, too!) I would order at least one mold of this one. And probably two in case I got ham-handed. Thanks for your efforts and volunteering to honcho. We might be surprised at the number of 41 enthusiasts who decide to buy into such a project.

475/480,
Although your specs aren't "ideal" for me personally, they are close enough that you could count me in. My concerns are the following:

Why a gas check shank length of .120"? Seems a bit long. Wouldn't .100" suffice?

Your body band length is .675". Did you mean .0675"?

Thanks,I corrected the band to .0675.
This is just personal opinion, but I like a good size grease groove in front of the gas check.

This sounds like a great beginning! I would be in for at least one, maybe two of these....any chance of getting a drawing posted?

I will also be interested in anything around 280 grain or heaver.

Thanks for raising your hand on this one. :p

I personally was thinking more in the 220-230 gas check version with a 0.413 diameter for 75-80 percent of the entire boolit length, and then dove-tail into a 60 percent flat nose. A very small crimp groove would be placed 0.2 back of the start of the ogive. ... felix

The inside dimension of a Hornady .416 gas check is .395. I would suggest about .392 or so on the diameter of the gascheck shank. I am not married to the idea of a gascheck for this size of bullet. Would there be a possiblity of three of the cavities cut without the check?

475/480
09-15-2005, 09:47 PM
Thanks 7br,I changed the GC dia to .3925 to fit the Hornady and Gator .416
Lee say's NO dual cavity moulds.
Do we have anyone that can do the drawing.

OK, I think I can scroung up some cash somewhere if this does go through, ramem for dinner for awhile ;) As for the weight, why not a 250? If not 265 is fine by me.With a nose of .425, that will make it 1.715 OAL if I have it figured right, (1.290 + .425 = 1.715) That will be cutting it close on my ruger, but I am game, lets run it up the flagpole and see who salutes.
OK, now off to bed for me, my head is falling over.

I would pony up for one even though I don't like Lee moulds. It would need to be .413 diameter and meet Felixes needs as I plan on using it in a Ruger, T/C and an 1894FG.

This may be a stupid question, but if we are looking at $60-70 anyway, would Dan at Mountain moulds be interested in doing a run for us? I have one 4 cavity mould and really didn't need the production. I guess he is probably going to be a little bit out of touch because of hunting season, but then so am I.

475/480
09-16-2005, 08:24 AM
The best Dan can do is a 3 cavity,I actually have a 3 cavity -.411,255gr WFNGC from him.
This is 1 of the reasons I went with 265gr ,I didn't need another 250 or 255gr mould.

Sorry, problem is a 230-240gr at .413 is to small on weight and to big on Diameter.

I would really like the 6 cavity Lee. I can definitely use the production. I don't like any of the current Lee designs and the only 4 cavity I have is a 210 SWC which is a little heavy to cast with for very long. I wouldn't mind a 220 gr 410459 or 41032 design, but most of y'all are way past that. I like Sean's design very much. I am learning a heck of a lot from you guys' posts. I am ready to send my check in whenever Sean is ready!

Thanks!!

I have a couple of bids in on ebay. I assume they will fall through. If they do, I would be interested if the price is less than $60. I really don't need the production and I would rather spring the extra for a mountain mould.

Are the Oregon Trail (TruBlue) and Cast Performance WFN GC designs a good place to start thinking about load data? I was considering ordering a few of these to get my feet wet, so to speak. Dang but that could get expensive if you do much shooting! Will be glad to get this one under way.

I like the design but can the lube groove be increased in width? Perhaps by making two of the driving bands on either side of it slightly smaller in width. I know this will decrease total weight somewhat but think the extra lube is needed. Thanks for your consideration. Bob

If we can get 10 orders I will get this started. If not the price on these would go even higher $70.00 and I dont think it is worth it.
Hi PC Bob, why do we need more lube? I increased the lube area in front of the gascheck for this very purpose. But if there is a reason feel free to speak up.Also if we decrease band width too much the bands will be difficult to fill.

Sean,

Can you get a picture posted? I think that would help us out too. IF we can get the price down to a reasonable price (Yes I am a poor person) I want in, I need one as buying them costs way too much for me.

Hi PC Bob, why do we need more lube? ...

Sean

Sean, to second, Greg, a picture is needed.

Of the molds I have for this caliber, the SEACO #411 220 grain Keith type has the largest lube groove and shoots the best for me in my S&W 657. Does that mean that more lube makes a bullet better, I do not know. Expect other factors are at work.

However, at 265 grains, the bullet we are discussing is 20% heaver than what I am now shooting. I will have to get a rifle to use a bullet this heavy. Now that is a happy thought :-)

Sean, please disregard my earlier request for a design change to increase lube. The space ahead of the gas check was not included in my considerations when I made it.

I would rather have had a similar design for a 250 grain bullet but it is too light for this group. However, I will still buy a mold assuming the cost does not exceed $70 and sit it aside for that rifle.
