I realize this has been discussed a 1000 times, but here goes:

I am getting to have a mold cut for my 41 flattop. I have lots of 357s, 44s, and 45s to shoot, so the 41 is going to be a limited use gun for when I feel like shooting something special. As such, I want to go with a checked design. Now I see that there are three check sizes made for the 41. Obviously the 416 rifle is the most common but it seems like an excessive amount to crimp a check. I also see that a "thin 41" check is available from Blammer. Then there is the "regular 41" check that is apparently made from unobtainium.

So for the not so simple question: Which is best? I'm looking for accuracy, ease of reloading, and I don't particularly want to be tied to one vendor since I plan on using this mold and gun for the next 4 or 5 decades.

I personally would choose the 416 gc, it is most available.

If you have the shank cut for it, it will not have an excessive amount of crimp.

If anyone needs some I have a fair supply of the Lyman 41 checks for their molds.

Have your mold cut for the standard shank size .395-.397. Gator checks will fit! I will give you all the checks you can shoot with my new design special order aluminum that does not spring back and has great accuracy to 2400 fps. Of coarse don't load your 41 that hot! Drop me a private PM. James

I have to say I really don't see the need for a GC 41Mag. With proper alloy and/or heat treating (drop quenching) you will never get much over 1500fps anyway out of a revolver. My T/C spits them out at 1500fps and Drop Quenched WW metal does just fine with PB bullets from 195-300gr.

I have the Ranch Dog mold TLC411-255RF

Tar Heel , I'll surely agree with you in regards to pistols, ...but in a Levergun, I'll surely be wanting a GC.

D6, it depends on which mold. The new standard is 416 and all my molds by MP, Accurate, NOE use them.

i sold my flattop and miss it. It has the old xr3 grip and you'll smack your knuckles with stiff loads so watch your hands!

The "thin" check is the one that fits the Lyman and Saeco molds and was the first check made for the 41. The 416 is a make due application once Hornady stopped making the thin check. Gator (Dr Blackman) makes the thin gcs and designed the thicker cup gc for some of the custom mold makers to use as some thought the thin check did not work very well. I never had a problem with them and have been shooting the thin 41 check for almost 30 years.

I have found since going to the Hi-Tec coating on my boolits that a gas check is not needed up to 1,550 fps out of my Ruger SBH Hunter. I do still shoot the Saeco 220gr TC with the thin gc but also shoot the RCBS and Lee SWC plain base boolits.

Good point! I always forget about you long-gun folks....

I would give my eye teeth for a model 92 Winchester in 41 magnum. Would be a great companion for my S&W model 58. If I win the lottery one day I'll have one made up, with a receiver sight and real nice figured walnut....I'm dreaming again!

I have a 412640 Mihec mold that I will use the 41 thin from Blammer. The shank on my mould is throwing at .0398 which is a little large but the samples Darrell has sent seem to work. For now I have been shooting them neckid and they go where I point them from the 4-5/8 SBH I shoot. I'd suggest you cast a few and check the shank DIA and then decide on what check to use.
