Does anyone know how much cash it would cost to fit a 44 spec. cylinder to a Blackhawk? And who does this work? Neat idea.

You'd probl have to ecahmber a .357, or .41 caliber cylinder. I don't know what it would cost, but I'd expect it to be pretty pricey. This has been discussed before with a lot of suggestions to just load your 44 mag. down being offered.

Dave Clements (Clements Custom Guns) does this as a specialty; I believe he gets about $525 to rechamber your cylinder, rebore your barrel, replace your front sight, and reblue. For another $200 or so, you can get the hammer, frame, and ejector rod color case hardened.

Turnaround time is right at (or slightly over) one year.

You cannot start with a 357 cylider as there shorter. You will need to find a 41 mag cylinder or a 40 sw or 10mm. Either that or you will have to have a cylinder made from scratch and that isnt cheap. Im sure if you provided a cylinder it wouldnt be that expensive of a proposistion.

Actually, Dave Clements routinely performs this operation on Old Model Ruger .357s, and it works just fine. A .357 cylinder is the perfect length for a .44 Special - compare the case dimensions.

If the cylinder is shorter you will need to set the barrel back to get the proper cylinder gap. It will work but you will not be able to do an interchangeable cylinder gun as your 44 mag cylinder wont fit anymore.

Which Blackhawk model are you considering?

The size of the frame will make a difference as to the answer.

A lot of the conversions to 44 Special that were written up years ago were done on the 3 screw model not the SBH frame.
