View Full Version : Has NOE changed their venting?

It's been awhile since I bought one. I was wondering if they've changed their venting as I saw some pics of a NOE mold with straight lines rather than the crosshatching or jeweling. Just wondering because when ladle pouring using the crosshatched molds I get a lot of flash to tediously pick off. Not a problem when using the bottom pour just when pressure casting with a ladle which I prefer to do. Even Don Eagan's straight line vents get some alloy in them when I do that.

Whenever I used make a mould (for my own use) I would use a Fly Cutter to inscribe "Smile Type Air Vents" into the face of the blocks before cutting the bullet cavity. The "Theory" being that hot air will RISE when the mould is filled with molten lead. At least, that was my "Theory."

Thanks Swede, the old stuff is pretty, but the combination of a high tin alloy that needs a high pouring temp, and pressure casting is sure keeping me busy removing flash. I know it isn't a mold alignment problem or anything like that, I can see the alloy's flowing into the ventlines. I played with casting and mold temps, best results come right on the edge, some bullets get flash, next few might not, and on. Maybe just a touch too much of a good thing, as I'm using it anyway. On the positive side, I know I'm getting 100% fill and weight variation is at a minimum once I remove the flash. Wouldn't you know, I just trimmed my nails to minimum yesterday!

Southron, I had Bernie Rowles of Old West Bullet Molds cut me a few molds with an Eagan nosepour cherry. That mold could sure use some smiley cuts, it really traps air, especially on the conical part that narrows down to the sprue. It took me awhile to realize that's what the frosty spots on the bullets were. That reminds me, I have one of Swede's two cavity blanks that's vented the pretty way. I'll bet it'll work very good cut with the Eagan cherry. Gotta get the jaws of my centering vise fixed up.

Nice eye candy, Swede! And yes, 375UGER, check out their website. Very intuitive, lots of good info and some very good moulds well worth the money.

I recently purchased a NOE 453423 and it has the new line venting. All of my previous NOE moulds have crosshatching venting. I have had fine results and can say both have this in common: They make great bullets very easily.
