Thinking of getting one, wondering what you guys think of the new ones? Micro groove is gone as I understand. Wondering loads, how do they shoot cast? Effectiveness on deer? Any info appreciated. Thanks Craig.

I have several Marlins in .357 Magnum. They're fine for deer at reasonable distances. I've loaded a 185 gr. RNFP-GC bullet up to 1,710 fps using Lil'Gun. That would take any deer I've ever seen up to about 150+ yards, and with good sights, possibly a little further.

Hope this helps.

Yes my 357 carbine will kill a deer - but my 44 carbine seems to be more decisive. That said I wouldn't part with my 357 especially with todays shortage of 22LR.

Luckily your94s twist rate is fast enough to stabilize the heavier boolits.

I had plans to use Lar45's or RD's 180 grain boolit, but the 1:30 in the Rossi does not see to astabilize the heavier boolit.

At least it does like the 358156.

I have a 1984 1894c micro groove. It will cycle the NOE 360-180 WFN. My dads 2009 1894c Ballard rifling will not cycle the same cartridge.

The newer gun may need a little taken off the carrier.

Both guns shoot the load great.

The 357 magnum is a whole other animal in a rifle. Stay within 100 yards and it will drop a deer dead in its tracks with a good solid shoulder shot.

Djones's load almost mirrors mine. I have a 2011 1894cs and its load of choice is the Noe 360-180wfngc over 14.5 gr Lilgun but my boolits are air cooled ww and weigh 184-185. I did mix up a batch of 50/50 +2% tin so I will cast some from that next time I cast. It is a vey accurate boolit in my gun but I haven't had a chance to shoot any live targets yet.

What COAL are you loading to with the 180 grain boolit?

Not a Marlin, but a 20" Rossi 92 instead, but mine is in .357. I use a 158gr on top of 14.0grs of 2400 and it works great on deer and hogs, out a bit past the 100yd mark. I try to hunt closer than that regardless of what I am carrying though. Just work up a good load and put it where it belongs and it just plain works.
