the former was 60 gr solid brass at 2100 fps, the later was 100 grs, solid copper at 2000 fps. Given the longer, stronger case of the .460 Rowland, 70 grs at 2300 fps is nothing "hot". The Rowland gets 165 grs to 1550 fps. :-) it also gets 230 gr jhp's to 1350 fps. it actually outperforms factory .44 mag ammo in the same sized gun. A govt model 1911 is 8.5" long. the 4" barreled M29 smith .44 is 9.5" long. cut an inch off of that barrel and factory 240 gr loads are barely averaging 1200 fps, at best. Some barely crack 1100 fps from that short a barrel, average of all 6 chambers, from some guns. Add an inch longer barrel to the .460 Rowland and it will get 1400 fps with 230 gr jhp's. The .451" .45 is as much larger in OD as the .44, as the .44 is larger than the .41. :-)

the first thing a new DA .44 mag owner does is develope a .45 ACP type load for rapidfire and normal practice. I say that the reverse is more sensible. why not just fire a very few hot loads in the .460, and swap barrels back to .45 ACP for most stuff? :-) The 1911 is a lot more of a daily defensive wear gun than the m29 will ever be, for a fact.
