I introduced my friend Jason to .30 cal. rifle cast bullet shooting about 3 years ago.

He sized, lubed, and loaded these ( w/ zero help from me ) for his 30-06 Eddystone with some 311290's with 11.2 grs. of Alliant Unique. Bullets sized .310"

Not bad shooting at all for 5 rounds at 50 yards with military sights from a rifle that is near 100 years old.

The photos of Jason were taken prior to him shooting the 5 shot group, he was smiling big after he shot the group.

Needless to say that now he is " hooked " on .30 cal. cast bullet shooting out of his many 30-06 rifles.

My range doesn't have box fans.

Well ill done Ben. Maybe I should get my 1917 back from 1shirt......

Funny, box fan is the first thing I saw. Second was the car jack front rest. Yep he's hooked, you can see it in the eyes. And by the way I really dig the car jack thing, I have a machine handle threaded and pinned on mine. I also have a couple of those paid way too much ones, Greenie, Blackie, but Jack still gets to go now and then.

I'm using a cut up office chair base for my front rest which works great and I really like his paper plate targets. Looks like he has found the "load" for his rifle. Gotta love it

Sounds like grounds for a formal complaint ! !

Nice group. I like my 1917 Enfield as much as my '03-A3 Springfield. Hate to admit it but I have not tried any cast boolits in the 1917.

This 10 shot group at 100yards (benchrested) from my issued Winchester M17. The load was 30.5gns 3031 with a Lyman 311284 gas checked and sized to 0.310".

I do think that my 1917 likes that unique load. And yes, having a box fan is a requirement at a range now. I will reloading more of this load tomorrow.

I recently fired over 40 ten shot groups with my Springfield 30.06 and the Lyman 311284 to come up with these couple of groups. I admit it is fitted with a 3-9x scope and many groups were close, but no cigar! The barrel is a 4 groove Remington that has never seen a jacketed boolit sine I cleaned the cosmolene out of it. In the second target there are 8 rounds in the little cluster that measure under 0.5MOA!

I have 2 Enfields fitted with the excellent Parker Hale 5B range sights

i have a win model also and thought the 311041 would be a good fit [with some minimal measuring on my part]
it likes the rcbs 30-150 fngc better. [shrug] but shoots the 041 acceptable.
the strange thing is my 03A3 really likes the 311041, which i found out when fire forming the left over loads from the 1917 in it.
saved me a lot of testing looking for a load though.
the 311284 would be a great choice too.

The temperatures here in Az are way beyond what a box fan can help with!
Shooting cast in these old military rifles has put the fun back in shooting.

The long finger grooves are M17 the Short P14. I have a few sporting rifles in 303/25, 308Win and 303 Epps Improved

My 1917 is my favorite go to the range rifle. 13 Unique for me with a 314299 @.311. Seems to be just the ticket for steel swingers out to 200 yards. Nice shooting by the way.

This is but one example of why I always recommend that folks try 10 gr of Unique under
"any boolit in any of the lat 19th century or early 20th century full sized military cartridges"
and work up to maybe 12 gr or so, if the results are good.

Nice work all the way.

What yardage was your buddy using on his ladder? I ask because I was out today with my 17 and didn't do well at all. 16 gr of 2400 and 311299 as my bullet. I used the folded down battle sight and then the peep on the ladder all the way bottomed out. Couldn't tell if I was too high or too low.

i use 21 grains of wc820 and the sight is set on 400 yards velocity is 1775 es is 15fps, almost the same as with 2400 i think you need to go up
