Hi all I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a theory I have I am going to load a 316365 NOE boolit to about 1300fps to try on a post shoot (6" pine shot at 25m teams of 3 fastest time wins) my theory is the boolit at a slower speed may become unstable and tumble? causing more ripping and tearing I hope to experiment a bit before the actually shoot any merit in my thoughts?

I like a soft bullet with the point cut off to make it a WC. Don't slow it down either. Would use the biggest caliber available.

If the bullet tumbles it is more likely to exit the post to the side without doing as much damage. Better it goes straight.

I would use a heavy, soft, wadcutter and push it as hard as I could handle with accuracy. The bigger the better. Accuracy being the key at 25m.

I would go with a heavy fast hollowpoint. A bowling pin at 200yds did not survive a center hit with a .510" 650gr JHP traveling at a projected (load table) 2900fps. The downside to the load was that the accuracy sucked. 4MOA at best. The center hit was luck (if you weren't the pin).;-)

eta: Tazman's post showed up as I typed. Pretty much the same advice , but I'd go with a hp version of a Keith if we're talking boolits and not the condom versions.

1300 fps is not slow enough to make it tumble.

I would use the one you are most accurate with.
Shoot 4-5 hits at the mark then shoot one shot at the top to bend it over and backwards and break it.

I'd use a 45 cal wadcutter if you have one.

Blammer-- I 've never seen a boolit like that little beveled point on the right in your picture. It's a nasty looking thing.
What is it? Where did you get it? Do they make one for 38/357?

Lyman once offered a similar mold for 38/357 , 358093GC - don't know if they still do.

Some of the post shoots I`ve shot did`nt allow hits in the top 1/3rd of the post , they DQed ya !

I shot the 44mag with the Lee 310 gr. rnfp, our team won all three posts , 2x4 , 4x4 & a 4x6.

2 were shooting the 44mag ,1 45lc & a 45acp. What a BLAST would be a gross understatement !!

But BIG FUN !!!

it's a light bullet I forget the weight, OWBM made it, it was known as the drill bit mould.

here is where those stackable wadcutters would come in handy!

2-3 in a 357 mag? it's like pulling the trigger 3 times instead of once. :)

Blammer, the full wadcutter loads you pictured, do they feed through the pistol? Is there a thread on them?

Thanks.

Thanks guys I normally shoot my 44/40 rifle and 45acp pistol you can enter in as many teams as you like I wanted to get a team of 303 shooters together to do a rapid-fire should sound good if nothing else will hope to do a test before the event to see if the 316365 boolit does tumble I do run a fairly soft alloy 50/50 PB WW maybe I'll try some at 1600fps as well

I don't know about "cartridge loads" - but when I was shooting NSSA (rifled musket - black powder) - most of the fellows preferred a bullet that was shaped just like an "ash can" - i.e. wadcutter. Of course those were flying out of ..58 and .69 rifled muskets. Most stake chopping was done on 4 x 4. I once shot against a team that not only took out their 4 x 4 but a rail road tie as well before any of us finished on our 4 x 4s. Those wad cutter style minie balls make quick work of it!

Sounds like a fun event! Let us know how it goes.

Wadcutter cuts a full caliber hole, plenty accurate to 25 yds.

Can you use a 12 ga with slugs?
