I have an old H&A .58 under hammer. Wondering about the twist? I taped a flag to the top of the ramrod and using a tight patch it looks to be maybe a 1in60 twist? I've only shot it a few times with a minee cast with mediocre results. Would this be mostly for a round ball? Anyone have one of these out there? How does it shoot and with what load? Thanks!

I don't have one but a 60" +/- twist in a 58 cal should shoot either patched roundballs or Miniés well. Unless your twist measurement is off by a mile, any relatively slow twist in 58 cal is good. Start at about 45 gr FF and work up to maybe 60 gr. I wouldn't think there'd be a need for more than that in that rifle.

just FYI- If it is the 58 cal Numrich H&A Deer Stalker, then it is listed with a 72" twist… according to a 1976 catalog.

Thanks. That probably is the right twist. Forget the barrel length but the ram rod flag went about halfway around. I'll start with 45 gr of 2ff with crisco lube and see what I get with the minie.
