While I'm waiting on the 4 MP 45 colt molds to finally enter production from recent GBs, I ordered an NOE 454-255-RF mold as seen here:

I'm looking for some load suggestions. Also, I have a .452 sizer, but no .454 sizer. Which should I go with and why? They will be fired from my 2 Marlin lever actions, Blackhawks and Smith 25 Mountain Gun. FYI, accuracy with .452 sized 45-270-SAA boolits is just fine with a healthy dose of HS-6 (20-22K PSI load ratings per Brian Pearce)

I like Clays powder for plinking loads in the 45 Colt. I use from 4.5 to 5 grains in a Marlin lever rifle and a Ruger new model Vaquero with the Lee 255 grain bullet. .452 works in my Marlin rifle just fine but the Vaquero leaves a little to be desired (could be my eyes!). I have a .454 sizer to try in it but haven't had the opportunity. I usually size as large as the rifle/handgun will chamber. The above load may not be as heavy as you are looking for but is lots of fun in a 24" Marlin cowboy.

Clays would be nice to try. I have several powders to choose from. My ideas with this boolit was as a "traditional plinker".

Powders available are:

Titewad, 231, CFE Pistol, Longshot, TrailBoss, AA#9, 296, Blue Dot, 2400, Lil Gun. The faster powders will best here, so thats where I'll start. Wish I had some clays to try. Or even more trail boss. What about a BP substitute for S&G?

I currently load 13 grains of BlueDot under a NOE 454424 SWC with great results in a 7.5" Blackhawk. I would imagine your 255 RF would perform similarly as they are approximately the same size.

What kind of velocity are you getting out of it?

You're gonna make me get out the chronograph, aren't you?

LOL! No, I typically chrono all my loads and log them. I also jot down how accurate they are. So even if you tell me it is x fps, I'm still gonna run it over my chrono. But if you need an excuse.....

Ok, you asked for it. NOE 454424 13.0 grains BlueDot out of a 7.5" Ruger Blackhawk at 92 degrees F at sea level at high noon produced an avg 1072 fps over 20 rounds.

LOL. I have a 5# jug of BD that I've been playing with in the 357. Since the 41 is a no no now with BD, I'll load some of this combo up and see how she shoots in the 45 colt.

Matter of fact, I just asked the wife to turn on the pot about 5 so itll be ready to go around 6 when I get home. Can't wait to see how this new mold/load runs.

Don't do too many .454" bullets ahead of time in case loaded rounds don't chamber.
