Looking to get a 1911 in 9mm. I was looking at the RIA Tactical. Anyone have one and care to comment? How is the accuracy of the 9mm platform in a 1911?

Accuracy in the 1911 pistol depends more on firearm quality and attention to fitting than than the caliber it is chambered for. A properly fitted and set up 1911 is going to be very accurate with whatever cartridge it is tuned for.
Personally, I think a 1911 in 9mm would be a lot of fun to shoot.

I seriously considered building a 9mm 1911 for PPC comp shooting but retired from comp shooting before I got very far. Magazines are difficult to find, barrels are a bit odd and frames/slides are a bit different. I don't recall all the details and without a doubt they have changed since then. Bottom line; I determined the 1911 is a .45acp platform. Other platforms, such as the S&W PPC9, were purpose-built and delivered better accuracy with less fuss and quite likely, expense.

My 9mm barrel was rechambered to 38/45 ACP. Shoots pretty well and uses stock 45 ACP magazines. That might be an option for you if you can find a 9mm barrel. It's easy to convert back and forth between the two calibres and case conversion isn't all that difficult. The downside is that the 38/45 is really a target cartridge and not a high performance round. The 38/45 allows you to use your 45 frame and slide without modification.

With the 9mm barrel and a Kimber .22 barrel and slide, this one 1911 is a little shotgun with shot loads, a .22 cal plinker, a 38/45 and a 45.

I have a RIA 9mm Tactical model 1911. Gitcha one, you'll like it! The ONLY problem I've had with mine is getting the last round stuffed into the mag. The platform handles 9mm like a champ, like it was made for it. Nice shooter.

tazman covered the accuracy potential.

Generic 9mm FMJ in a full sized steel 1991 is very easy to shoot -- not much recoil and hardly any muzzle rise during recoil. I wish I still had the 9mm top end I put together 20+ years ago.

I just bought the Sig Sauer 1911 Stainless Match Elite chambered in .40 S&W and it is an outstanding shooter. The seller told me that he kept the same model pistol chambered in 9mm and it is now his favorite pistol. There are a couple on GunBroker but they are tough to find and so are the magazines.

The Dan Wesson PM-9 is one fine pistola. Full size 1911. Way fun to shoot and very accurate. Checkmate makes the mags and they too work real well.

I own a pair of 1911s from RIA. Both are Government Models. One is setup for 9mm Para with a 38 Super barrel in addition (I use the Starline 9mm Supercomp or 9mm Largo cases for that barrel to evade the issues of the 38 Super semi-rim) and I just completed a switch-barrel setup for the other 1911 in 45ACP/400 Corbon.

Scharfschuetzer has a nice wildcat in that 38-45 as it was designed by a Master Gunsmith by the name of Bo Clerke who was from New Mexico and has a successful barrel-making business there in Raton. He developed the 38-45 in 1963 for use during the Centerfire portion of a Bullseye match so he wouldn't have to change his grip angle of the 1911 and it was during the same time that the AMU people developing a working 38 Wadcutter 1911. Colt brought out a 38 Wadcutter Gold Cup in 1964 and I'm sure that a lot of shooters were torn between the two as Colt's Gold Cups had issues with feeding that rimmed case while the 38-45 couldn't be hot-rodded back (despite peoples attempts) then due to the case design and no support off the 1911's barrel ramp.

I'm doing the same thing with my brace of pistols. the 9mm/38super pistol or the 400Corbon barrel for Centerfire; and the 45ACP pistol for the third leg of the 2700 point match. My next step will be to get a 22LR slide for one of the pistols or pick up a Ruger 22/45 to replace the S&W M22A pistol I currently use in the matches so all three stages have the same grip angle and trigger pull.

I have a Springfield armory 1911 in 9mm that i bought used years ago , at the time i had no other 9mm's but i did have another 1911 in 38 super , so i had the nessary equipmet to cast & load ammo. so i installed a Kart EZ fit 38 super barrel in the SA 9mm and have never put the 9mm barrel back in it.

Over the time ive owned the SA 1911 9mm/38 super i have installed a Videky trigger , trigger job, Ed Brown grip saftey , melted Bomar rear sight and Novak dovetailed front sight.

Im soon having the frame industrial chromed and useing the orgional blued slide.

In april i picked up a EAA Witness Elite Match in 9mm , IMO alot of gun for $580.00 it comes with alot of desirable features, it's ready to go right out of the box.

Glad to see this post Tomme Boy. I been ponderin' the same thing. I don't have anything in 9mm. I think I should...just in case. Love the 1911 platform but not interested in one for carry. I think it'd make a fun range gun. I missed the boat on the Citadels that Acadamy had for sale at $329. a while back. I figger they'll have them again in a few months. Locally I saw one for $400. Same maker (Armscor)) and puddy good reviews. Might have to piddle around the next gun show. Just what I need...another one to start reloading for....sigh. Audie....the ponderin' Oldfart..

I have one. It is finicky with all but round bullets loaded to about 1.150". I would recommend not considering any gun with a frame ramp unless you're happy with it only eating round bullet ammo.

I love it and have shot it a lot, but reliable with flat points it is not.

I want this as a just a range toy. One thing I see is finding magazines. They are no where to be found anywhere. I might have to give a friend a call at Springfield Armory to see if he can get me some if I get one of these.

Magazines aren't hard to come by actually. I used the DP 10rd magazines for 3yrs in my STI Trojan.

Built a .38 Super years back, was very simple to fit a 9x19 barrel to it, and have a dual caliber gun. Magazines and barrels are readily available, don't know why some can't find any. Start with a 9x19 and you can easily do the reverse, add a .38 Super.

The RIA feed ramps are nicely polished from the factory and I've had no problems shooting Truncated Cone boolits in all four calibers and barrels. The TC bullet profile was the original 9mm Luger profile so I say, why mess with a good thing.
