Ok i just bought a 1952 marlin 336 in 30-30. Im looking for a good load to use in it. Im looking to use laser cast 170 grain .310 diameter non gas checked bullets and imr 4064 powder. Im looking to use in for plinking.Haven't seen any load data for this yet. Anybody use something similar to this? Thanks!

Generally the 4064 will be "happy" at a higher velocity than your Lazer cast bullet without gas check will be. I won't say you won't get good results, but they aren't likely. I think your bullet without gas check may be happy in the 1,200 fps range and the 4064 will probably come into it's own up in the upper teens velocity wise. Let see what other caster/shooters have to say.

Switch to RX7 or 3031 and be happy, happy, happy.

What other powders do you have available? 3031? 2400? RL7? BLC2? 748? I don't think 4064 will be very happy in the 30-30 but the 30-30 is remarkably flexible when it comes to powder.

I dont have access to a lot of different powders down in california but what i generally can get is 4064 imr 4198 h4198 imr 4350 and i might be able to get rl7.

Thanks for the replys! I think i can also get 2400. For 2400 about what is the starting amount of grains?

14-16grs of 2400 makes an awesome plinker load; 1600-1800 fps give or take.

Is that accurate 2400? Thanks for the powder charge!

In my 94 Winchester I get good results with a 174-grain, plainbased bullet, cast of 1:20 tin/lead alloy, using 15 grains of IMR4064 with Winchesterprimers, giving 1293 fps, performance being similar to the .32-40

No, Alliant. And you're quite welcome. Not much data out there for this powder/cartridge combo outside of the Lyman catalog but recipes like this are why I keep a few editions (45, 48, 49, CB #4) of the Lyman manuals handy.

Thanks for all the help I will be going to the reloading store tomorrow to get powder.

I think you will be happy with the 2400 for plinking, and I use to use IMR or H 4198 in my 30-30
But for hunting loads the 3031 was the most accurate in my rifle with heavier bullets.

For the plinking load about 15 gr range give or take a grain or two of 2400 would be great and accurate depending on your gun and loading characteristics. 4064 is a very good higher velocity cast boolit powder, but consider a GC boolit for that velocity range.

I just got some w748 today what would you guys recommend as a powder charge for that?

The 748 is about the same speed as the 4064, so going to work better at the upper velocities for the 30-30, and will need a gas checked bullet. I think it is cautioned, since the 748 is a ball powder, not to reduce it very much. It is not a suitable powder for a plain based bullet in the 30-30.

I was told about 26 grains of 748 on a 170 grain non gas checked cast bullet would work well

26 grains of 748 in a 30-30 with a 170 grain bullet is going to produce somewhere in the range of about 1,650 to 1,700 fps. I think this is from 300 to 450 or so fps too fast for your bullet without a gas check. It will go "boom" and the bullet will exit from the bore, but I wouldn't expect any accuracy. I have worked with the Lazer cast bullet you are mentioning. I would suggest one of two options here. 1. Buy a Lee .311 sizer and some gas checks and install the checks on your bullets and use your 4064 or 748, or 2. Find some 2400 powder as suggested above to use with that bullet without gas check. I could be totally wrong and you can certainly try them and prove me wrong, I hope you do, but I think I'm giving pretty good advice here.

For plinking/target loads with PB bullets in the .30/30 I stick with pistol/shotgun powders like Unique, Universal Clays, Red Dot, and Bullseye. Equal velocity, usually better accuracy (for me anyway), and way better economy than charges of slower burning powders.

I run 6.3 gr of alliant power pistol under a lee c309-170rf without the gas check and get decent plinker loads

cheap , economical , they work

maybe you can find that
