Good morning,

I have an early Pedersoli rolling block. It has a hexagonal barrel. If I level the top of the receiver then place the level on the top flat of the barrel by the globe sight, the barrel is out of level axially.

I am no rifle expert but this suggests to me that the barrel has been threaded into the receiver just a little too far.

I want to replace the original globe sight with a spirit level type globe sight and would like to correct the sight alignment problem.

Is it possible to shim the barrel?

I appreciate any suggestions and comments.

I've heard of shimming barrels to correct this, also stippling the face.

Mark: the procedure goes like this putting the rifle in a padded vice:
* Magnetic bubble level on the receiver flat - to determine horizontal level of the rifle
* Magnetic bubble level on staff or base of the vernier - to determine vertical level of the vernier
(Be sure the windage of the vernier is dead smack in the middle)
* Shim under the vernier base to align the vernier so it is exactly vertical level with the bubble and still level with the receiver bubble. When you insert the shim(s) under the base they have to be between the vernier screws - not touching the screws on the edges of the base
Then using a laser bore sighter - look through the diopter of the vernier. The light of the laser has to be exactly in the middle of the sight insert your using. If not, drift the front sight left or right to bring into alignment with the laser light. You can also obtain your 100yd base line setting when the laser light is positioned in the middle of the circle of the insert or on the tip of the post or pin head
You now have the vernier vertically aligned with allowance for exactly left or right windage maximum travel to the front sight in line with your front sight

These are the bubbles and laser you'll need

i am no expert either ... just a backyard fixer so here is my thoughts on your problem.

i would leave the barrel rite where it is with the current front sight being just a bit off kelter and then install a vernier on the wrist ... level the rifle to the front sight and then level with either a file on the base of shims under your vernier.

walla ... your boolits will not know that the action is canted a bit as long as the front sight and rear are parallel to each other. the repeatability [considering a good vernier] will be on the money as the rifle will be canted the same shot after shot ... the only thing will be that you will know ... all is not plum with each other.

If you are using a rear tang sight then just buy some thin shim stock to cant the rear sight slightly. I level the rifle in a gun vise so that the bubble in the front sight is centered. Then I use a level on the rear sight staff and play with shim thickness on one side of the sight base until it's square. For long range shooting people will often shim the rear sight to compensate for spin drift.

I would like to see a picture of this. I read about hexagonal barrels all the time but have never seen one.

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. Count those flats again - I bet there are eight, not six.

Mark - how are doing putting your sights into alignment?
