Shooters,

*** Question

I own a Ruger .454 Casull that also shoots 45 LC. (Very Neat)

Is there a single boolit that will work in both?

Is there a powder that will work in both?

If not

What works for you?

I have these 3 Lee molds
90359
90382
90463

Thanks for any info

I load 255grain lead SWC bullets over 9.3 grains of Trail Boss powder. Calculated velocity of 1000fps, but don't have a chronograph to verify. 255 grains is the lower end of the Casull range and was the old 45Colt cowboy bullet weight. If you need to go faster than 1000fps you should use a different powder. I'm looking at Accurate 5744 right now to get the same bullet up to 1400fps for deer hunting. I like powders that fill the case for the load to avoid the possibility of double-charging...

Yes, there are many boolits that can be used with both. My favorites are the Lee 300 gr. GC and Lyman 452651 330 gr. GC. for full throttle .454 loads, and Lyman 452424 or Lee 255 SWC for .45 Colt or reduced .454 Casull loads.

I don't shoot .45 Colt in my .454 Casulls....if I want a reduced load I load down in .454 brass. The .45 Colt loads are used in a Ruger BH.

I guess im another one that doesnt see any use in using 45 colt brass in a 454. If you want light loads load down the 454s. Sure brass is more expensive but 454 brass is usually very good brass and lasts along time and will last a real long time with light loads. there are problems that can be ran into because of it. One is carbon build up in your clyinder which to me is slightly overated. As long as your smart enough to clean your gun after using it its not a consern. One problem is a stout 45 might make it into a gun it wasnt designed for. Another problem and the major reason i dont do it is ive yet to see a shorter round outshoot the same level load out of brass made for the cylinder. the jump to the throat of the cylinder will usually take away from accuracy. the only place i could see a use for doing it is if a guy isnt a handloader and wants cheaper ammo to shoot but then i personaly feel a 454 is silly to own anyway if your not a handloader as youd go broke trying to learn to master it.

I have the Super Redhawk in .454. I am in complete agreement with Lloyd and 454PB.

I have one as well. But I, unlike the posters above do like to shoot the 45LC in mine. I like it for the same reason that most people shoot the 38 special in a 357 magnum, because it is cheap and I am able to get range brass more readily in 45LC. I like to shoot reduced loads in mine to minimize recoil to concentrate on trigger pull for the same reason. My favorite load is a 185SWC, tumble lubed with Lee Alox, over 4.5grns of Blue dot. This is a very mild load, just enough to expand the brass to seal the chamber, with absolutely zero leading.

Everett

Who makes the mould for the 185SWC? And what is the model?

Its a Lyman 452488. Using straight WWs, mine drops at 185-187grn. This bullet also works well in my 1911.
