Winchester-made P14 Enfield rifle made in 1916... the 303 British chambered precursor to the Model 1917 30-06 that most of the Doughboys took to the trenches in 1918...

Mine was rebuilt by the British Army at their arsenal in Wheden in 1937 with a new stock and the removal of the volley sights.

The barrel is still immaculate and will give an honest 2" group at 100 yard with a load of 40gr IMR4895 pushing a 147gr Russian FMJ-BT pull-down. Using Sierra's 174gr Matchking with 44.5gr if IMR 4007SSC (Yes, I know the powder is being discontinued!!! :groner:) I can get an honest 1.5" group.

Take that all you Garand photo posters...

Keep this up and I'll post a photo of a Garand in a polymer stock with a 7mm Mauser chambered barrel....I call it "The Heretic"...

You still looking for a front sight to that little carbine? I'm thinking of picking the same setup for a Large-Ring Mauser Action just sitting on a shelf in my garage.

Bruce
It's on the "to do" list

I've picked up a ladder sight to replace the "L" rear, but haven't mounted it yet and then the plan is to put a Scout rail,
thread the barrel get a pistol sized 45 caliber suppressor then pick a front sight to be tall enough to see over the can and remark the ladder sight for my normal 230 grain TC cast boolit trajectory.

Pair of Mosin's and a Yugo SKS I'm casting for.

I'm struggling with trying to get good accuracy out of the Mosin's, I may just give up and accept that they shoot minute of 5 gallon bucket and leave it at that. I'm sure a big part of the problem is me, old eyes and iron sights start getting iffy after a while. But I hate to bubba up a classic milsurp just so I can get the accuracy I want out of it.

So I may leave the Mosin's as a couple of nice wall hangers and play with the SKS.

All sweet rifles! That Gras looks virtually mint. I'll bet it's a hoot with a case full of black powder.

How about a couple of 1891 Argentinian Mausers. Both made by Loewe (Berlin) and made in 1894. While not as old as the Gras above, they're still 120 this year and both shoot pretty well.

That's got to be the Holy Grail for Springfield collectors! Legend and perhaps fact has it that old Teddy Roosevelt himself nixed the Ram Rod Bayonet 1903 and caused its redesign to what we know today.

I'm glad that you like it Scharfschuetzer. Thanks. I guess you're right. I know that I've wanted one for over 40 years and only just recently obtained this one. It was a gift from my wife for building her another stone patio. Upon getting my hands on it, I was really relieved and pleased to find out that the barrel is indeed still in its original 30-03 caliber.
I read that while being shown the new rifle, Roosevelt was witness to how well the extended bayonet went into and through a pine board with one thrust. That's when Roosevelt asked for a Krag bayonet and with it in his hand (not on a Krag rifle), He gave the rod bayonet a powerful slash with the blade and the heat treated 1903 rod bayonet broke.

The Martini Cadet bayonets were made during the second world war for the home guard to practice with, and are extremely rare. There could be as little as 50 ever made. They were made from a shortened SMLE Pattern 07 blade and custom attachment plates.
