I've been bit by the cast boolit bug..
totally new to it...
so to get started . one must have a rifle right ?
thinking I'll start with the 30-30...
i have a 1947 Winchester model 94.
and a 1980 pre-safety 336 in 30-30.
....
which would y'all choose to start with ?

I'd use them both. Slug the barrels first to determine the diameter of the cast boolit you need in each. You may get lucky and find that both will take the same diameter--but maybe not. Before you go loading up a lot of ammo with boolits, do some reading. This site is a good place to pick up info. Good info. You'll hear a lot of folks on the street talk about leading when shooting cast boolits. Much of the time, they've started off with store-bought, hard-cast boolits that are not properly sized to the gun they are using. But back to the original question, I'd probably start off with the Winchester, but not because of any of the **** people talk about when the subject of micro groove Marlins come up. Marlins can be made to shoot exceptionally well, with no problems, provided the boolit properly fits the Marlin you are using.

I'd start off with the one I'm going to shoot the most.

I'll second "the one I'm going to shoot the most."
Next mold should be a fun one - like the Lee Soup Can... something about shooting those little 115g boolits that I like.

I'd want to eventually load for both but if looking for a hunting load would start with the one most likely to go hunting with me. If just for targets and plinking go with the one you'll shoot the most. I like both of your choices very much but they could very well have different tastes. I've learned to focus on one CB project at a time, distraction of another similar project has lead to frustration and confusion for me more than once. Take good notes and keep us posted, lots of threads with good info for either project.

Pick the gun you like the most, or start with the one you shoot best. Starting with Cast can be a struggle and I found it helpful to be using a rifle I really liked. Don't expect too much at first. Just keep at it till you like your results. And stay with these guys. They are a huge help.

Either gun and save yourself some grief and star casting too.
RanchDog 165, RCBS 180, SAECO#315, or Lyman 31141 .
Run through a .312 sizer/lubricator, and cast hard or heat treated, and you'll do fine so long as velocity is kept reasonable.

The Lee C309-170-F is widely acclaimed as producing accurate bullets for the 30-30. My results with this mold and a Marlin 336 are outstanding.
