View Full Version : It's Like Crack

I swear, casting is as addictive as crack. Try it once and you're hooked. Started casting with a Lee 214 SWC mold for my .44 special a few month ago. I found the molding process to put me in a "good place" mentally, and they shot great at a fraction of the cost of factory ammo. Then tried them in my .44 mag. same results. Despite casting a few hundred boolits, I soon found myself wanting to cast more often. Then I decided I must have a WC mold, and found an old Lee 208 WC mold. Again, I cast several hundred boolits, more than I could reload in several days, but the urge persisted. In addition, the need for lead became overpowering forcing me to scour the countryside for a source. Snatched up anything I could find, wheel weights, large 16 oz fishing sinkers, scrap lead.... Then today I found myself inexplicably buying a .429 200 gr RF mold, and then a .401 174 TC for my .40 S&W. Is there a cure?!

Yep, those are the symptoms.

No, there is no cure. Now you will need to get a long gun in the same caliber. Handi make a 44mag. Lever guns are nice too.[smilie=1:

It gets a lot worse as you go. Welcome to the addiction![smilie=l:

There is only one cure... You must pack up everything you have for casting and send it to me at once. Failure to do so will leave you in peril of losing your sanity and control over your reloading future. If you continue it will only be a few weeks until SWMBO will sound as though she is speaking in Swahili whenever she asks you to do something around the house. Your children will be found wandering in the street without shoes and you will live in small cramped dark rooms muttering to yourself over the failures of your lube at 2200 fps. You will begin to sound as though you speak Swahili to all those around. Give it up now before it's too late, I will PM you my address.

Actually, it is known to maintain one's sanity. Ever heard of a boolit caster and reloader going ape in a shopping mall or school? And quite seriously, notice how pleasant and helpful boolit casters are on this forum? So I will politely encourage you to send all your casting stuff to me instead!:bigsmyl2:

In all fairness 303guy they would get caught as they were picking up their brass, and trying to retrieve their lead :p

It's definitely an addiction. You'll know you've gone "clinical" when you have to have a separate safe just for the molds that you bought for guns you don't own yet!:veryconfu

Don't remember which mod it is but he offers a 1012 step program cause 12 just doesn't get close to a cure!

I cast my first boolits when I was 14 years old. That was about 2 decades ago. My very most favorite time to cast is over Christmas holiday. My birthday is on the 29th of December, and my tradition is to buy myself a mold on my birthday (funds permitting). It's a wonderful thing and makes life more enjoyable.
Welcome, and congratulations!

There are two cures: complete denial or complete acceptance. The latter is much more enjoyable. Visit the group buy section, experience complete indulgence.

I too began casting for a .44, but I prefer heavier bullets. The Lee 240 gr. .44 T/L was my first and I now have 5 molds for .44. My favorite is a toss up between Lyman's 420421 or Ranch Dog's 265 gr. RNFP. Both shoot well in my 5, .44 Magnums...

Even though I have a nice little hoard of lead, I am constantly on the look out. My family thinks I'm crazy because it is always on my mind. When I meet someone new I'll say you do so and so for a living, do you come across any lead? Drives my wife crazy.

Group buy section what kind of cure is that every time I look I see another one I really must have . So I take it I will for ever be in complete denial and have come to realize that I have completely accepted it
By the way does any one have a .416 Rem. Mag. for sale?

If you think thats bad, wait until you get a star lube sizer with bullet feeder and heater... you will find you constantly feel the need to cast and size even more.
I love it and cast about 3-4 evenings a week (sick huh). It relaxes me and i get much joy from it.
You will sooner or later pick up a bunch of powder and moulds and then buy a gun just for them.

WELCOME TO THE MADNESS
