Okay what is the trick to get the barrel band over the huge front sight? Is it like the two horseshoes connected with the chain and a little ring in the middle puzzle?

Remove the front sight blade.

I seem to recall that the pin is tapered and must drive in and out correctly. You may want to research that.

some body must have put a taller front blade in. I have not had to ever remove any to get the barrel band off. the pin drives from the guns left side. I have put some taller front blades in. I make them out of old brass keys.

The front sight height depended on which rear sight was on the rifle. The 1892 and 1896 rear sights took a blade that was .285" tall, measured from the bottom of the blade, the 1898, 1901 and 1902 sights required a blade that was .410 tall. The .410 blade has to be removed to get the upper band off. Driving out the pin from left to right will allow you to remove the blade. I can't swear to it, but I think Numrich's Krag barrels are Criterion. They use the same nonstandard for a Krag thread for the sight mounting screws.
