So I need some advice,my much used 586 has got a bit of movement in the cylinder,I can grip the cylinder and twist it a thou or two sideways and a few thou forward and back, the cylinder gap is .012 and it has a problem with light strikes in DA.I'm looking at getting the yoke rebushed and maybe setting the barrel back a turn to close the gap,am I on the right path as far as whats needed?. Thanks in advance Pat

Cylinder gap of 0.012 is 0.004 over max.
End shake more than 0.002 is too much.
Check wobble with the hammer down and trigger held back. Should be no perceptiblemovement.

If there is, cylinder stop, locking bolt notches in cylinder and/or hand, and / or ratchet may be worn.

S&Ws shot a great deal with heavy loads get beat up by cylinder backspin.

You are on the right track, but should have a factory trained armorer check it.

Sounds like time for a major rebuild.

Pat - I can't say, personally, if your revolver needs smithing or not, necessarily. You might try the Smith & Wesson forum. They have a gunsmithing section with some very good stuff that will apply. Especially relating to end shake and how to properly measure it. Hope this helps. Mike PS get off that website quick, you'll be spending lots of money on revolvers........

A good 'smith or S&W armorer can "stretch" things a bit and solve your end shake issues. An oversize bolt may help as well, but again a good smith or armorer can tell in a moment what it needs.
